The best new shows to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Max (HBO), and more

John Lithgow and Jeff Bridges in The Old Man season 2.
FX

After a few weeks of sustained momentum, this week’s lineup of new streaming shows is a little sparse. Hulu’s season 2 premiere of The Old Man is the biggest attraction for action fans. Meanwhile, Netflix has a new mystery miniseries, The Perfect Couple, that has some comedic overtones.

Meanwhile, Only Murders in the Building and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power are still getting new episodes weekly on Hulu and Prime Video, respectively. Perhaps those shows can tide you over until the other streamers start adding something fresh to watch. Until then, you can find all of the rest of the best new shows to stream below.

Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Max, Disney+, Paramount+, Peacock, and Apple TV+ all have one thing in common: They’re more expensive than they used to be! We can live with higher rates as long as new shows keep coming, but it’s always a good idea to consider signing up for the ad-supported tiers, which are worth it if you can sit through a few commercials.

When you’re done here, check out the best new movies to stream this week, as well as the best shows on Netflix, best shows on Hulu, best shows on Amazon Prime Video, and best shows on Disney+.

FX’s hit action series The Old Man is back for a second season, and that means Hulu has it as well. Last season began with ex-CIA agent Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) on the run from his former colleague, FBI deputy director Harold Harper (John Lithgow), who put a price on his head.

This season forces Dan and Harold to at least temporarily put aside their differences for the sake of Dan’s adoptive daughter, Emily Chase (Alia Shawkat). Emily has been kidnapped by her biological father, Faraz Hamzad (Navid Negahban), and taken to Afghanistan. To get Emily back, Dan and Harold have to go behind enemy lines.

Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) are back in Only Murders in the Building season 4. This season is going even more meta than before, as Paramount plans to make a movie of the fictional podcast in the show. Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, and Eva Longoria are even playing themselves as the actors lined up to portray Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, respectively.

Of course, there are always more mysteries to solve. Last season ended with Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch) taking a bullet that was clearly meant for Charles. But who wanted him dead, and why? We’ve got a brand new season to discover the answers to those questions.

There are some darkly comic moments in Netflix’s new mystery series, The Perfect Couple, and no perfect couples are found here. Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson) is marrying into the wealthy Winbury family, even though she’s not super into her husband-to-be, Benji Winbury (Billy Howle). The family matriarch, Greer Winbury (Nicole Kidman), has a dismal relationship with her husband, Tag (Liev Schreiber). And don’t get us started about Thomas Winbury (Jack Reynor) and his wife, Abby (Dakota Fanning).

Regardless, Amelia plans to go through with the wedding right up until a member of the wedding party winds up dead. This is a scandal that could expose some deeply held family secrets, and Greer can’t let that happen. A killer may be near, but no one is more ruthless about dealing with her problems than Greer.

“The end of the world is tomorrow.” Except in this case, the end of the world is August 29, 1997, as depicted in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Scientist Malcolm Lee (André Holland) has seen the future dominated by Skynet, and it terrifies him to his core. That’s why he’s created an alternate AI, Kokoro (Rosario Dawson), that may be able to mitigate Skynet’s influence and prevent the fall of humanity.

Skynet retaliates by sending a new Terminator (Timothy Olyphant) back in time from an alternate version of 2022. A resistance soldier named Eiko (Sonoya Mizuno) is sent back to prevent the Terminator from killing Malcolm and/or his three children. But with Judgment Day looming in the near future, can either Eiko or Malcolm truly change the outcome of humanity’s destiny?

We’ve seen some stacked casts in the streaming era, but Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist takes it to the next level. Getting Kevin Hart, Samuel L. Jackson, Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Don Cheadle, Lori Harvey, and Dexter Darden in the starring roles is very impressive.

The year is 1970. Muhammad Ali’s return to the boxing ring provides an opportunity that’s too good to pass up for a group that makes plans for a heist that could be the score of the lifetime … if they don’t turn on each other along the way.

In an era where two or three years can pass between seasons, Apple TV+’s spy thriller Slow Horses is back for its fourth season only 10 months after its season 3 premiere. Warning: Spoilers ahead. Season 4 is already off to an intriguing start, as MI5’s River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) struggles to care for his aging and paranoid grandfather, David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce), only to wind up dead at his grandfather’s hands.

At least that’s what everyone was supposed to think. Even the head of Slough House, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), believed it. The reality is that River has faked his death for currently unknown reasons, while a new terrorist threat endangers the security of Britain.

Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence adapted Carl Hiaasen’s Bad Monkey for Apple TV+, and the name is a bit of a misnomer. There is a monkey, who isn’t particularly bad … and he doesn’t even belong to the main character. Instead, the story focuses on Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), an ex-cop from Miami whose career has seen him sink from detective to restaurant inspector.

But when a severed arm shows up without the rest of the body, Yancy is roped into the investigation that exposes the seamy side of life in Florida. And when Yancy learns who the arm belongs to, it opens up a completely different set of questions about who committed the crime and why.

The Sopranos arguably set the tone for the past 25 years of TV dramas by daring the audience to side with and sympathize with mob boss Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini). To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the show, HBO and Max are debuting the two-part documentary series Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos.

While this series will dive into the creation of HBO’s most iconic show and its continuing influence on TV, it’s also taking a look back at the life of series creator David Chase. The documentary traces Chase’s history in the entertainment business before he makes some history of his own with The Sopranos.

HBO’s Industry is giving off some Succession vibes in its third season. It also helps that Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington and Barry’s Sarah Goldberg are both joining the cast this season. The first two seasons depicted the cutthroat world of a London investment bank, Pierpoint & Co., that separated two main characters, Harper Stern (Myha’la Herrold) and Danny Van Deventer (Alex Alomar Akpobome), from their jobs.

Harper may get a lifeline from a woman named Petra (Goldberg). Meanwhile, Robert Spearing (Harry Lawtey) finds himself feeling out of place as he’s assigned to work with Henry Muck (Harington), a CEO who is looking to take his green energy company public. This is a slow-burn series for adults, and fans of Succession should feel right at home.

And now that Sauron (Charlie Vickers) has been revealed, he’ll be getting the spotlight this season as he advances his agenda. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) discovered the truth about Sauron’s identity in the first season finale, and now she’s trying to stop him from regaining his lost power.

Meanwhile, the Stranger (Daniel Weyman) and Elanor “Nori” Brandyfoot (Markella Kavenagh) are going to encounter Tom Bombadil (Rory Kinnear), a beloved figure from J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels. But they’ll also have to contend with a dark wizard, as portrayed by Game of Thrones‘ Ciarán Hinds.

OceanXplorer may have a title that sounds like it escaped from the ’90s, but since it’s the actual name of an oceanic research vessel, we’re going to let that slide. James Cameron is lending his voice to this National Geographic miniseries, and producing the show is another example of his passion for the sea and what lies beneath.

Each episode follows the explorers and scientists on the OceanXplorer as they head to some of the most remote locations on the seven seas in the name of scientific research. They’re also equipped with some of the most cutting-edge technology available, which offers a unique opportunity to learn more about the creatures and the ecosystems that live beneath the waves beyond our view.

The 42 best Netflix drama shows right now (August 2024)
The cast of Fire Country.

There are three new additions to the best Netflix drama shows in August, but none of them were made by Netflix itself. The streamer has been more reliant on outside programing this year, probably because of last year's Hollywood strikes. The good thing about the arrangement is that network shows like Fire Country and Prison Break have a lot more episodes to stream than most Netflix originals do.

This month's other new addition, Dark Winds, is part of the AMC+ invasion on Netflix. That's only going to be for a limited time extending into next year, so we'll have plenty of time to talk about the other AMC dramas on Netflix if the streamer doesn't add anything new in September. But for now, these are the best Netflix drama shows that you can stream.

The best Amazon Prime original series right now
An animated Batman with a fiery scene behind him in Batman: Caped Crusaders

Despite Amazon Prime Video's exceptional subscriber counts, its best original series often don't get quite the same recognition as those from other streaming platforms. After being the first streaming platform to win an Emmy with Transparent, it has taken some time for Prime Video to be back in the good graces of critics. Fortunately, 2024 series Fallout earned 17 Emmy nominations and season 4 of The Boys also met its high expectations.

This month, Amazon diversifies its animation portfolio with a new original from Batman: The Animated Series creator Bruce Timm, who returns to Gotham City with Batman: Caped Crusader. Plus, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's raunchy animated feature, Sausage Party, gets an original spinoff, Sausage Party: Foodtopia. Read on for the best Amazon Prime Video original series available now.
We’ve also rounded up the best Netflix original series and the best Hulu original series if Prime Video doesn’t have the originals you’re looking for.
