The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is about to get a tough new competitor

The foldable phone market is currently dominated by Samsung, particularly with its recent Galaxy Z Fold 6 release. However, another player is entering the scene next month. Honor is expected to launch its latest foldable device before IFA Berlin in September.

On a teaser page for its attendance at the annual European tech event, Honor has displayed a large banner with the slogan “AI unfold your magic,” along with the names “Honor Magic V3,” “Honor MagicPad2,” and “Honor MagicBook Art 14.” The first refers to the company’s latest foldable phone, launched in China in July as a successor to the Honor Magic V2. Honor launched the Magic V3 in China earlier this year, but IFA is where we should see the phone get a global release.

As highlighted by GSMArena, the Honor Magic V3 is considered a strong competitor in the global foldable phone market. It features the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip found in Samsung’s latest phones. The Magic V3 also boasts an impressive camera system with a 50MP primary camera, 50MP 3.5x periscope camera, and 40MP ultra-wide camera.

In terms of design, the Honor Magic V3 is incredibly thin at just 9.2mm and lightweight at 226g. This makes it thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 6 (12.1mm, 239g) and the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold (10.5mm, 257g).

One potential barrier for the Honor Magic V3 could be its global price. The Magic V2 debuted at £1,700/€2,000, indicating a steep price for the Magic V3. Foldable phones, in general, are quite expensive. Samsung’s latest model starts at £1,799/€2,200, so a high price for Honor’s latest phone should be anticipated.

Honor is expected to announce its new products for the European market on Thursday, September 5. IFA Berlin kicks off on September 6.

2024 was a challenging year for Samsung as its smartphone lineup has fallen stale just as it faces more competition in every smartphone segment than ever before. The Google Pixel 8a and OnePlus 12R challenge the Galaxy A, while the Galaxy S24 series faces challenges in every key market.

Then there’s the foldable lineup, and it’s where Samsung has improvements to make. The company made foldable phones mainstream, but while it drove much of the initial innovation, the competition has begun to surpass it. The OnePlus Open proved that there was an alternative to Samsung’s prowess in multitasking, and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 did little to dispel that notion last year. At the same time, Google made a much better foldable with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold; Honor proved that you can have a slim foldable with a big battery, and Motorola proved that it can outdo Samsung on the flip front.

Samsung’s budget Galaxy Z Flip FE will keep this spec from the Galaxy Z Flip 6

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip FE is expected to launch sometime next year, most likely toward the end of the second quarter of 2025. We don't know a lot about the budget-oriented flip phone yet except that it's expected to use the Exynos 2500 chip. Now, another leak suggests it will keep the same display as the Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Ross Young, a known tipster and supply chain analyst, responded to a comment on X and stated that the Z Flip FE would have the same panel as the Z Flip 6. For reference, that's a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel with 2640 x 1080 resolution, a 120Hz variable refresh rate, and a maximum brightness of 2600 nits.
