This is an announcement trailer through and through, complete with a CGI cinematic with no characters beyond a faceless Vault Hunter picking up a Psycho mask. There wasn’t a lot of information revealed, but we know a couple of things. It’ll follow a similar plot to past Borderlands games: You play as a Vault Hunter looking for a mysterious and powerful vault. The trailer also shows what we believe is Pandora, the planet where the series mostly takes place, floating violently through space before it gets hit by fiery meteors. Borderlands 3 took players to other planets beyond Pandora, so it’s possible we’ll see even more beyond Pandora in Borderlands 4 — especially if it gets destroyed.

The game currently has a 2025 release window, and is available to wishlist on Steam. The Steam addition is a surprisingly big change, as Borderlands 3 launched as an Epic Games Store exclusive before eventually coming to Steam six months later. It’ll also be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

As Opening Night Live host Geoff Keighley said, this game didn’t leak, so it worked as a good first announcement. New Gearbox owner Take-Two Interactive did previously reveal that Borderlands 4 was in the works. In a recent interview with The Gamer, Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford admitted he hasn’t done a great job hiding its existence, either.

This is welcome news for Borderlands fans, who just had to watch the long-gestating movie adaptation hit theaters with poor reviews and an even worse box office return. The last game released in the franchise was New Tales from the Borderlands in 2022, which continued the Telltale story-driven spinoff Tales from the Borderlands. Players last got first-person shooter action with Borderlands 3 in 2019, but also in the RPG-esque spinoff Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands in 2021.

Every summer 2023 gaming showcase: full schedule of live streams
Detective Pikachu and a Slowpoke wearing a cowboy hat.

Summer is one of the most exciting times to be a gamer, as it's when most video game developers and publishers tease what's coming next. For years, this was all centered around E3, but since that show went away during the COVID-19 pandemic, publishers have switched things up and held a variety of reveal-focused live-stream events throughout the entire season. This year has been no different, especially with E3 2023 is canceled.

On May 24, Sony kicked things off with a PlayStation Showcase that revealed games like a Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake and that Bungie is reviving the Marathon series. In June, though, the number of showcases ramped up. Now, things are winding down with new Tokyo Game Show-related events, as well as a second Nintendo Direct. It can be a lot to keep track of, but we're here to help. This is every important, announcement-filled video game live stream that has taken place throughout summer 2023.

Everything announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023
Jin in Tekken 8

Gamescom, one of the largest video game expos in the world, takes place this week in Germany. To kick things off, Geoff Keighley held another Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase to give us an update on what's in store from the gaming industry, with a slight focus on already announced titles and games by European studios. Keighley and influencer Jasmin Gnu hosted the main event following a pre-show hosted by Kyle Bosman.

While the show was long and slow-paced, we did get plenty of new looks at upcoming games like Mortal Kombat 1, Assassin's Creed Mirage, Alan Wake 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, and Tekken 8. Director Zack Snyder even swung by to debut a trailer for Rebel Moon during the show. It's a lot to keep track of, but we've rounded up everything announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023 and its pre-show right here.
