Die Hard (1988)

Die Hard
132m
Genre
Action, Thriller
Stars
Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, Alexander Godunov
Directed by
John McTiernan
Watch on tubi

Die Hard is mandatory viewing during the holiday season, but it’s a great movie to watch any time of the year, and now you can watch it for free, at least this month. Bruce Willis is at his finest as John McClane, an NYPD detective who travels to Los Angeles on Christmas Eve in hopes of winning back his estranged wife. But when he arrives at a party, terrorists take everyone hostage and start making demands. Since John was in the bathroom at the time, no one knows he was there. As he works to take down Hans Gruber (the late Alan Rickman) and his men, John finds himself in a series of precarious positions.

As a fun and thrilling action film, Die Hard spawned several sequels and transformed into a franchise. However, the original movie truly sets the stage and delivers on the witty dialogue. Yippee ki-yay, you’ll want to dive right into this film, especially to celebrate the holiday season with this Christmas movie that isn’t really a Christmas movie.

Rush Hour (1998)

Jackie Chan, Chris Tucker, Tom Wilkinson

Brett Ratner
Watch on tubi

Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker are the dynamic duo no one knew they wanted until the pair appeared on screen together in this buddy cop action comedy. It was so popular that Rush Hour spawned two sequels, both of which are also available to stream on Tubi. The actors play police officers assigned to rescue a Chinese diplomat’s daughter. While Detective James Carter (Tucker) of the LAPD initially believes he’ll have to do a lot of handholding with Chief Inspector Lee (Chan) from Hong Kong, he quickly realizes that Lee can more than hold his own.

Rush Hour is filled with hilarious dialogue as the pair try to communicate with one another and deal with dangerous scenarios. The chemistry between the two and the choreographed fight scenes that put Chan’s martial arts prowess on full display make this movie and its sequels extremely rewatchable.

Happy Gilmore (1996)

Dennis Dugan
Watch on tubi

Everyone saw Bob Barker in a new light with his short but hilarious cameo in this movie, one of Adam Sandler’s first after being famously fired from Saturday Night Live. Happy Gilmore helped Sandler build his movie production empire, and it remains one of the best of his films. He stars as the title character, a down-on-his-luck aspiring hockey player who just can’t cut it. Things go from bad to worse when he discovers that the IRS is repossessing his grandmother’s home because of money she owes in back taxes. He needs to make money quickly to help, and while he might be a terrible hockey player, his slapshot makes a mean golf swing.

Coached by a retired, one-handed former pro named Derick “Chubbs” Peterson (the late Carl Weathers), Gilmore tries to navigate the cool, calm, and collected world of golf with his rough-around-the-edges, combative hockey style. Happy is motivated to beat his rival, Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald), and save his grandmother’s house. With a sequel set for release in 2025, it’s the perfect time to rewatch Happy Gilmore.

Whenever Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio join forces for a film, you know it’s going to be good. Such is the case with The Departed, an epic crime thriller that’s loosely based on the Boston Winter Hill Gang. DiCaprio is Billy Costigan, a man working undercover for the police to infiltrate the mob. Jack Nicholson plays Irish mob boss Frank Costello (based on Whitey Bulger), while Matt Damon is Colin Sullivan, a spy working within the state police department.

The Departed is a twisted and intense movie that showcases both sides — cops and criminals — at odds with one another when both discover what’s going on. The Departed earned four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. In fact, it’s Scorsese’s only Best Director win to date. A gritty gangster drama, The Departed is one of the best gangster movies of the 21st century.

The film’s talented voice cast includes Anna Faris, the late James Caan, Andy Samberg, Bruce Campbell, Mr. T, Benjamin Bratt, and Neil Patrick Harris. Quirky, clever, and downright fun, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is the perfect movie night flick to watch with the littles.

As the duo spend the day in Echo Park and South Central Los Angeles, Jake quickly realizes that Alonzo may not be the strait-laced, decorated officer he’s made out to be.

Alonzo has terrifying methods to get the job done, taking the concept of a corrupt cop to a whole new level. The dynamic between the two leads is what truly makes this movie. If you ever doubted Washington and Hawke as tremendous actors, Training Day solidifies their statuses as two of the best from their respective generations.

Rawson Marshall Thurber

If you’re in need of a good laugh, toss on Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, a fun sports comedy. Dodgeball follows a group of misfits who decide to join a dodgeball tournament so they can win money to save their local gym from being taken over by a fitness chain. Peter LaFleur (Vince Vaughn) has one month to come up with $50,000 to save his gym from being gobbled up by his rival White Goodman (Ben Stiller). As he and the team train, Goodman decides to put together a team of his own to embarrass them.

The cast is hilarious, also including Christine Taylor, Rip Torn, Justin Long, and William Shatner, with guest stars that include Lance Armstrong, Chuck Norris, and David Hasselhoff, all playing themselves. Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story is goofy, profane fun with the actors embracing their roles in a way that makes you deeply root for or against each one. If you love other Vaughn and Stiller comedies, this one will be right up your alley.

Death Wish (2018)

Death Wish
107m
Genre
Action, Crime, Thriller
Stars
Bruce Willis, Vincent D'Onofrio, Dean Norris
Directed by
Eli Roth
Watch on tubi

Death Wish is one of those movies critics hated, but audiences loved. Bruce Willis stars in this Eli Roth remake of the 1974 vigilante action thriller. Dr. Paul Kersey (Willis) becomes enraged when his family is harmed in a robbery. He starts to take down bad people, becoming increasingly unhinged as he takes his vigilante status to new heights.

Should Paul be condemned or praised for taking down carjackers, thieves, and drug dealers? That’s a deep, moral question examined in Death Wish. It’s one part action, one part social commentary. Whether you love this version of the story or not, there’s no doubt it will spark conversation.

The Usual Suspects (1995)

The Usual Suspects
106m
Genre
Drama, Crime, Thriller
Stars
Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Stephen Baldwin
Directed by
Bryan Singer
Watch on tubi

The Usual Suspects is one of those movies people still talk about to this day, even 30 years after it premiered. Known for delivering one of the most shocking twists ever in a film, the crime thriller boasts a talented ensemble cast lead by Stephen Baldwin, Benicio del Toro, Kevin Pollack, Chazz Palminteri, and Kevin Spacey. The story follow the interrogation of Roger “Verbal” Kint (Spacey), a small-time con man who is among the only survivors of a massive ship fire. He recalls the actions of a mysterious crime lord known as Keyser Söze, who he purports is responsible for what happened.

Even if you know how it ends, The Usual Suspects is the type of movie worth watching again and again to pick up on subtle hints and clues throughout. A master class in acting and superb writing, it’s arguably one of the craftiest movies ever made.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
83m
Genre
Horror
Stars
Marilyn Burns, Allen Danziger, Paul A. Partain
Directed by
Tobe Hooper
Watch on tubi

As classic a slasher horror film as you’ll ever find, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is must-see viewing for any fan of the genre. There are no flashy special effects, nor gratuitously gruesome scenes. But it is a terrifying movie about a group of friends who become victims of a family of cannibals and a sick killer known as Leatherface.

The first blockbuster slasher film to use power tools as a central weapon, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is considered one of the most influential horror films ever made. What makes it even more impressive is that the movie was made on a relatively small budget with a core cast of mostly unknown actors.
