Marlon Wayans: Good Grief (2024)

Marlon Wayans: Good Grief - Official Trailer | Prime Video

Laughter is the best medicine, the saying goes. Comedian and actor Marlon Wayans took this to heart for his comedy special Marlon Wayans: Good Grief. After losing both his parents, he uses a combination of jokes and roasts to share his feelings and grieve with the help of an audience of adoring fans. It’s one part stand-up routine to entertain viewers and one part therapy session for Wayans.

Filmed at the Apollo Theater, Marlon Wayans: Good Grief is great to watch just for a laugh, but Wayans’ approach may actually be cathartic for others going through a similar loss. The intimate and personal comedy also draws you into the chaotic lives of the Wayans, including his many famous siblings.

Quicksand (2023)

QUICKSAND! (2023) Movie Trailer - Michigan

Not to be confused with the horror movie of the same name released the same year, Quicksand is actually a fun bromance movie. The indie film stars Ray (Tanner Presswood) and Paul (Simon Elias) as two best men who misplace their best friend’s wedding ring. Now, they must head out on a frantic road trip to find it, with the clock ticking down to the wedding.

The film has a Napoleon Dynamite flair to it, as the two men in their 20s are far from having their lives together: one is unemployed, the other working an unpaid internship. Quicksand is a fun follow-the-trail movie as the two men go from a pawn shop to encountering all types of mayhem on a 400-mile drive. Terry Sherwood of Film Threat says the movie is “fast-paced and filled with interesting characters.”

Stream Quicksand on Amazon Prime Video.

Sid is Dead (2023)

Sid is Dead features Mary Stuart Masterson (Five Nights at Freddy’s) and Joey Bragg (Liv & Maddie), with the latter portraying the title character, Sid, a high schooler who has largely tried to remain invisible and thus out of trouble. But when he gets into an altercation with the biggest bully in school that results in the jock getting suspended, Sid believes he only has the time that Chuck is away left to live.

Sid’s overexaggerated teenage brain convinces him that when the strapping jock returns to school, Chuck is literally going to kill him. Frantically wanting to make sure he doesn’t miss out on all the best teenage experiences he has been avoiding, Sid makes a list of everything he wants to accomplish before his life comes to an end and sets out to complete it.

Sid is Dead is an adorable coming-of-age movie about a young man discovering himself in the wake of the most ridiculous circumstances. It’s also a movie about building confidence and instilling hope for the underdogs. With a respectable 81% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Sid is Dead has an endearing cast and cute premise that make it a winner worth watching.

The Rings of Power creators respond to controversial Dark Wizard theory
The Dark Wizard holds his staff in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2.

For all the mysteries it clears up, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 still leaves viewers with at least one major question to mull over as they await the show's return. The series' second season specifically does not reveal the identity of the mysterious villain known right now only as the Dark Wizard (Ciarán Hinds). The character's physical appearance and seeming allegiance to Sauron (Charlie Vickers) have nonetheless led many fans to theorize that he may be Saruman, the wizard famously played in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films by the late, great Christopher Lee.

However, in a post-finale interview with Vanity Fair, The Rings of Power showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne seemed to shoot that particular theory down. "Given the history of Middle-earth, it would be highly, highly, highly improbable that this could be Saruman," McKay said, to which Payne added, "If not impossible."
