Relive the best the ’80s had to offer with Universal’s 10-Film 1980s Collection

The 'Burbs (1989) - Official Trailer

I was born and grew up in the 1980s, a time before Twitter, mobile phones, fake news, and Justin Bieber. While seemingly an ideal era, things weren’t perfect, as this was still the era of VHS. If you wanted to own your favorite movies, it usually cost you around $100, and that was with inferior picture quality and sound, and with absolutely no extras, save for a few trailers here and there.

This recent action movie remake on Netflix is hated by many, but it deserves another look
Edgar Ramirez in Point Break

The original Point Break is seen as something of an action classic, especially among action fans of a certain age. The movie, which starred Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves, came out in 1991, and its reputation has only improved in the decades since.

It might seem foolhardy, then, to attempt to remake a movie that so many people already have strong feelings about. And yet, in 2015, director Ericson Core did just that, adapting the story of the original film to feel just a touch more modern. Whether you love the original or not, though, there are plenty of reasons this remake is actually worth watching, especially now that the movie is available to stream on Netflix.

What went wrong with Joker 2? Why Joker: Folie à Deux bombed big-time
Joker and Harley look at something in Joker: Folie a Deux.

á

In 2019, Joker was a massive success for Warner Bros., director Todd Phillips, and Joaquin Phoenix, who went on to win an Oscar for Best Actor for his turn as Arthur Fleck/Joker. It broke records for an R-rated film and finished with $1.079 billion worldwide. With that kind of money, it's easy to see why Warner Bros. wanted a sequel so badly. And thus all roads led to Joker 2, which is better known as Joker: Folie à Deux. In case you were wondering, the subtitle means "madness for two," but there may be more than two people going mad at Warner Bros. over the opening weekend that Folie à Deux had.

45 years ago, one of the best horror remakes of all time terrified audiences worldwide
nosferatu the vampyre 45 anniversary 1979 preview

It wouldn't be an overstatement to call Bram Stoker's Dracula the single most important and influential horror story in history. In pretty much every medium that matters, from literature to film, Dracula is synonymous with horror, embodying the genre like few other characters ever could. Sure, Frankenstein's monster and Mephistopheles might be quite famous horror icons in their own right, but they cannot come close to Dracula's status. Curiously, Dracula's most famous cinematic adaptation doesn't even carry his name; indeed, F. W. Murnau's 1922 Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror might just be the tale's best translation into the film medium, nearly single-handedly defining the horror genre and defining its visual language.

Nosferatu has received a few adaptations, including Robert Eggers' upcoming remake starring Bill Skarsgård as the iconic Count Orlok. However, 45 years ago, revered German filmmaker Werner Herzog delivered what could arguably be the best take on the classic Dracula story, borrowing heavily from Murnau's visual language.
