Every time you open the Max app, you may find that the streaming service is not actually recommending the things you want to watch to you. Few streaming services have a deeper library of great titles, but Max can seem determined to hide away many of its best movies.

If you’re looking for a great crime drama to watch on the service, then we’d recommend you take a look at this list instead of spending minutes or even hours trying to find one to watch in the streaming app itself. Hopefully, this list will give you a great movie to watch and save you some valuable time.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO - Official Trailer - In Theaters 12/21

Adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was director David Fincher‘s attempt to bring these knotty crime thrillers to the screen. The story focuses on two central characters, a disgraced journalist who is hired to solve the disappearance of a young girl decades ago, and a young hacker who eventually crosses his path and decides to team up with him.

Featuring two incredible central performances from Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, as well as the kind of virtuosic tension-building you might expect from Fincher, this movie is every bit as riveting as you want it to be.

You can watch The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo on Max.

A Bigger Splash (2015)

A BIGGER SPLASH: Official HD Trailer

A slow-burn movie that pays off tremendously, A Bigger Splash tells the story of a rock star vacationing in Sicily who suddenly finds herself hosting an old flame and his seductive daughter. What starts out as an awkward social situation quickly spirals into something darker, but the details of the plot are best left unspecified.

What’s clear, though, is that director Luca Guadagnino (Challengers), working with an all-star cast (Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, and Dakota Johnson) who are all operating at the peak of their powers, delivers a movie that feels both seductive and strange in a way that will keep you coming back to it again and again.

You can watch A Bigger Splash on Max.

Gangs of New York (2002)

Gangs of New York | Official Trailer (HD) - Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz | MIRAMAX

At the time of its release, Martin Scorsese‘s Gangs of New York was not as warmly embraced as many of the other movies in his filmography. The film tells the story of the battle between Irish immigrants and native settlers in New York in the mid-19th century. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a young Irish man who attempts to get revenge on Daniel Day-Lewis’ Bill the Butcher for murdering his father.

In addition to its fascinating portrayal of a New York roiled by a new immigrant population, Gangs of New York also features one of Day-Lewis’ best performance, and one of the best opening scenes of Scorsese’s entire career.

You can watch Gangs of New York on Max.

3 rom-coms on Netflix you need to watch in October 2024
A man holds a woman while she puts her arms over his neck.

Love is in the air on Netflix. As the season changes to fall, it's time to stay inside and watch a rom-com. One of the most famous rom-coms of the last 20 years, The Notebook, is now streaming on Netflix. If you don't feel like watching The Notebook for the hundredth time, stream one of the service's original rom-coms, including Hit Man, A Family Affair, and Mother of the Bride.

The rom-coms don't stop there. Netflix has an entire section dedicated to romance, which includes several subgenres — rom-com, emotional, holiday, adventure, and family. If you need a recommendation, try watching one of these three rom-coms: a tender father-daughter story, a TV show with millennial icons, and a 2000s staple.
