Despite the appearance of its many finishes, the Oura Ring 4 is made out of titanium. Titanium is lighter than gold, but it’s strong. In fact, it’s the strongest metal in the periodic table of elements because it has the highest strength-to-weight ratio, with a density of 4.5 grams per cubic centimeter and a Mohs hardness of 6.0. Conversely, gold has a density of 19.3 grams per cubic centimeter and a hardness rating of 2.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Because of its lightness, titanium is the most comfortable material to wear on your finger. However, that lightness does mean it tends to lack the premium “heft” of gold and other precious metals, so it can feel cheap. Be assured that it absolutely is not.

Aside from the Oura Ring, titanium is used in various forms of jewelry, from earrings to bracelets, because it’s a biocompatible material, meaning it’s largely inert and doesn’t adversely react with your body. It’s also hypoallergenic, making it less likely to cause skin irritations, which is very important for people with certain skin conditions.

Titanium is highly durable and resistant to bending and scratching, but it can still take some scratches. It also tends to scratch other jewelry made of softer metals, like sterling silver. If you wear the Oura Ring, you may want to be careful not to let it scratch against any necklaces, bracelets, or watches made of those metals. Don’t wear other rings next to the Oura Ring because they’ll get scratched by it if they rub against it.

What colors does the Oura Ring come in?

The Oura Ring 4 is available in black, silver, Stealth, brushed silver, gold and rose gold. The black and Stealth rings have a physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating on the outer shell, while the other colors have a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating.

The black ring has a glossy tungsten PVD coating, making it more durable. The Brushed Silver ring was created using  a technique called vertical brushing that allows it to reflect light at every angle and accentuate the properties of titanium. Thanks to its matte black finish, the Stealth ring contains an additional layer of precision and detail. Silver and Gold just have a glossy finish, while the Rose Gold ring has a glossy finish designed to develop a darker patina over time, depending on how you take care of it and how often you wear it.

Patent shows a mad smart ring with a design like no other
Various smart rings together on a table.

Smart rings are becoming a popular way to track health and fitness, and it looks like more companies want to find ways to make the finger-worn devices stand out. Now, Oppo has filed a patent for a smart ring that gives us an interesting look at just how far out of the box firms are thinking.

Oppo’s idea for a smart ring is to make it modular. According to the patent, the smart ring consists of three different sections — a ring, a holder, and the electronics — all covered by what looks like a dome. The electronics are placed on the ring, but can be detached at any time. By making the hardware modular, the patent states the ring section will be thinner and lighter, making it more comfortable and suitable to be worn with other rings.

You'll often find water resistance protection on products, which is good, but it's not exactly the same as being waterproof. But what does that really mean? We explain below.
Can you go swimming with the Oura Ring?

The Oura Ring has a certain level of protection that allows you to wear it while swimming, showering, and snorkeling. Waiting for an Apple smart ring? We have bad news
A person wearing the Samsung Galaxy Ring and the Oura Ring.

Smart rings might be all the rage right now with the Oura Ring 4 and the Samsung Galaxy Ring leading the way, but Apple currently has no plans to join the zeitgeist. In the premium version of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple isn't planning to make a smart ring of its own because it would pull attention away from the Apple Watch. This comes amid all the rumors that have persisted about the so-called Apple Ring.

According to TechRadar, Gurman says that an Apple Ring would "detract from the Apple Watch" and could "cannibalize" sales, especially when the Watch is basically dominating the market and still has room to grow.
