When a new Netflix original movie hits the streaming service, it can be hard to determine whether that movie is actually worth your time. Netflix makes plenty of great movies, but it makes plenty of schlock as well, and you might be a half-hour into the movie before you realize the movie you’re watching isn’t actually all that interesting.

Thankfully, It’s What’s Inside falls into that first bucket of movies that are well worth your time. This smart, psychological thriller/comedy tells the story of a group of friends who are gathered for a pre-wedding party. When one friend arrives late with a device that allows them to switch bodies, though, things quickly spiral out of control. Here are three reasons the movie is worth watching.

The movie features a cast of young, fresh talent

There’s a version of It’s What’s Inside that works. It might be more like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, where part of the joy is seeing actors with personas we know doing something wildly different than what they usually do. Here, though, we instead get the thrill of performers that are mostly new faces quickly establish their characters, and then switch bodies just as quickly.

It sometimes mean that these actors have to work with the broadest possible strokes of the actors they’re playing, but many of the members of this ensemble are more than up to the challenge.

It’s just mind-bending enough to keep you invested

One of the joys of It’s What’s Inside is that it’s actually a movie that is fairly difficult to follow. It’s not Primer, but the movie certainly has its characters switch places frequently enough that it wouldn’t hurt to have a chart of exactly what’s going on from moment to moment.

That kind of puzzle movie can be alienating to some viewers, but the mind-bending quality of It’s What’s Inside is part of the fun of the movie. Having to second-guess the identity of basically every character is a challenge, but once you’ve learned all the movie’s secrets, it’s also pretty rewarding.

It’s What’s Inside is a smart examination of how we really feel about our friends

In addition to being a heck of a lot of fun, It’s What’s Inside is an examination of the way a person relates to their body, and just as crucially, what this group of friends really think about each other’s bodies.

The title is obviously a play on the idea that what’s inside a person is what actually matters, and this movie seems to suggest we all care more about image than we might be willing to let on. It’s What’s Inside is fun and silly, but it’ll make you think just a little bit, and that’s valuable too.

It’s What’s Inside is now streaming on Netflix.

The 50 best shows on Netflix in October 2024
The cast of Outer Banks.

Netflix has become so reliant on outside hits that it's refreshing to see the streamer has more than one original show worth watching this week. The hit adventure series Outer Banks has returned for a fourth season, a rarity among Netflix shows. Additionally, the new animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft will give its title character a real chance to shine outside of the three previous Tomb Raider movies.

Meanwhile, the comedy series Nobody Wants This has been doing so well for Netflix that the streamer has already renewed it for a second season. Whether this week's new additions can match that success remains to be seen. For now, these are the best shows on Netflix for October.

Art the Clown brings terror for the holidays in Terrifier 3.

We live in such strange times. The sequel to a $1 billion hit has been so rejected by audiences that it might lose the No. 1 slot at the box office to a low-budget gorefest. Clearly, the lesson that should be learned from Joker: Folie à Deux is don't try to make a musical out of a dark comic book flick. Few people loved the musical number in The Marvels either, and there doesn't seem to be much of a crossover audience between the two genres.

With Joker 2 expected to drop even further than its dismal $37 million opening, Terrifier 3 might have a shot at the top spot. The early projections have it earning $12 million this weekend, while Folie à Deux is predicted to come in just under that number. It would be quite an upset for Terrifier 3's killer clown to defeat one of the most famous clowns in comic book cinema.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

Netflix came to play on the second weekend of October. Bad Boys: Ride or Die — one of the top films of the summer — has arrived on the streamer and instantly hit No. 1 on the list of the most popular movies on Netflix. We can't say we're surprised, since even minor action films do well on Netflix. However, this might be the biggest non-Marvel action flick of 2024.

Additionally, Scream — the 2018 film, not the 1996 original — is making its Netflix debut just in time for the Halloween season. This is notably one of the few movies to feature Jenna Ortega before she became the star of Wednesday on Netflix. For that reason alone, we think the film will do really well on its new streaming home.
