Universal Pictures

On March 24, 1984, five students at Shermer High School showed up bright and early for Saturday detention. When detention begins, the teens are total strangers, believing they have nothing in common due to their differences in social status. What better way to celebrate the fall than with a supernatural horror? Enter Five Nights at Freddy’s, the long-awaited feature film adaptation of the popular video game series. Desperate for a job, security guard Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson) reluctantly takes a job working the night shift at the abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria.

This isn’t a normal restaurant, a fact Mike learns rather quickly. The pizzeria’s animatronic mascots, led by Freddy Fazbear, come to life and become murderous vandals. The souls of five missing children possess the animatronics. It’s up to Mike to figure out what the mascots want or face their deadly wrath. While playing the video game isn’t required, it certainly helps to have some knowledge due to the high number of Easter eggs scattered throughout the film.

Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)

A group of college kids come together and pose for a picture.
Paramount

In 1993, Richard Linklater made one of the most influential coming-of-age films, Dazed and Confused. Luckily for his fans, Linklater made a spiritual successor to Dazed, 2016’s Everybody Wants Some!!, and it’s well on its way to becoming a timeless classic. Set in Texas during the fall of 1980, college freshman Jake Bradford (Blake Jenner) moves into his off-campus house and meets his new baseball teammates.

Some of the free-flowing characters include Glen McReynolds (Tyler Hoechlin), the team’s alpha; Charlie Willoughby (Wyatt Russell), the hippie pitcher; and Walt “Finn” Finnegan (Hit Man‘s Glen Powell), the eccentric ladies’ man. Over one weekend, Jake gets a crash course on the team’s priorities: baseball, getting laid, and drinking beer. No one is better at the hangout movie than Linklater, who manages to make the audience fall in love with a bunch of egotistical baseball players.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson as Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield aiming guns in the same direction in the film Pulp Fiction.
Miramax Films

October 14, 1994: The day audiences learned about the Royale with cheese. That iconic phrase originates from Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino’s groundbreaking crime drama. Pulp Fiction follows a nonlinear narrative with several intersecting characters and plot points. Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) are two assassins ordered to carry out hits for gangster Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames).

One storyline involved Vincent escorting Marsellus’ wife, Mia (Uma Thurman), for a memorable night on the town. Another narrative follows Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis), a boxer forced to go on the run after failing to throw a match. Pulp Fiction is arguably Tarantino’s crowning achievement, as Pulp Fiction’s legacy remains stronger than ever.
