The OnePlus 13 will beat most other smartphones in one surprising way

With the Chinese launch of the OnePlus 13 just days away, more and more details keep making their way to our feeds. This morning, three key specs on the OnePlus 13 appeared on Weibo (the Chinese social media outlet) and were posted by OnePlus itself. Two of them are exciting, while the other is downright surprising.

The first detail is that it will use an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor with a “super intuitive” position. In practice, this means the fingerprint sensor will be able to pick up details more accurately and will work even if your finger is wet. It also works in low light and should be significantly faster than an optical sensor.

The OnePlus 13 also features a much-improved vibration motor. According to the company, it will be able to achieve “gaming controller levels” of vibration for better feedback. The haptic feedback motor is the largest ever used on an Android device and will produce up to 72 different types of haptic feedback.

However, the most surprising spec update is the IP rating. Most modern phones are IP68; they’re rated to withstand submersion for a certain amount of time, but the OnePlus 13 is IP69 for dust and water. This means it’s basically dustproof and can withstand high amounts of water pressure. Not that you would want to, but you can theoretically hold this phone in front of a fire hose, and it will survive.

An IP69 rating is big news for any phone, but it’s especially shocking to hear that it’s coming to the OnePlus 13. For context, last year’s OnePlus 12 had a measly IP65 rating, while the OnePlus 11 had an even weaker IP64 rating. For OnePlus to skip IP68 and jump all the way to IP69 is unexpected, to say the least.

The news caused a bit of discussion among our team. After all, why is such a ridiculous degree of water resistance necessary? We aren’t sure, but it could post potential difficulties in terms of repairability. The manufacturing standards required to achieve an IP69 rating mean there are extremely tight tolerances in the fit of all the parts.

We know the OnePlus 13 is scheduled to release on October 31, but it isn’t clear when it will become available for global customers. The phone has already received a Federal Communications Commission listing, however, so there’s a good chance it might come quicker than expected.

The rumor mill is churning with exciting news about OnePlus' upcoming midrange contender, the OnePlus 13R. According to Digital Chat Station, leaked information suggests this phone could pack a serious punch thanks to a powerful all-new Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset and a massive 6,000 mAh battery for all-day endurance.
The new phone could also offer a 1.5K flat display. Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the rumored camera setup featuring a Sony IMX906 primary sensor and a 50MP telephoto lens for capturing detailed zoom shots.
Android Authority first noted that the new report doesn't mention the OnePlus 13R by name. Instead, it's likely talking about the company's next Ace device. However, that lineup is only released in China and rebranded for global markets. For example, the Ace 2 became the OnePlus 11R, while the Ace 3 became the highly-rated OnePlus 12R.

One point of contention for Android Authority regarding the phone discussed by Digital Chat Station is the chipset. While the leak mentions the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, it says the phone might include the slightly less powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to reduce costs — at least in areas outside of China.
Where could OnePlus release a phone worldwide with Qualcomm's next chip? The long-rumored OnePlus 13. The company’s next flagship phone should offer a 6.82-inch BOE X2 display with 2K resolution. It may also support 100-watt wired charging and 50W wireless charging.
With an expected announcement very soon, the OnePlus 13 and 13R are poised to make waves in the smartphone world. Their predecessors, the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R, remain top contenders in the market, setting a high bar for these upcoming releases. Both phones are anticipated to be available worldwide before the end of the year or early January.

The OnePlus 13 may have a cool display feature we’ve never seen before
The OnePlus 12's screen.

The OnePlus 13 has been making waves as one of the most anticipated upcoming phones, especially as leak after leak has emerged about its features and design. We take most of those leaks with skepticism, just in case something isn't totally spot-on, but now we have news straight from OnePlus itself: the OnePlus 13 can adjust the refresh rates for different parts of the screen.

That's an interesting feature we haven't seen before, and it has big implications for power efficiency. The OnePlus 13 is also set to have a 6,000mAh battery. That will provide a lot of battery life, but what if even more could be drawn out by making small adjustments on the fly?

A big price increase might be coming for the OnePlus 13

We've kept a close eye on the OnePlus 13 for a while now, especially after the first images made a splash just four months after the release of the OnePlus 12. Despite all the rumors, there's one bit of information that has been noticeably absent: the price. Well, that just leaked, and the news is something of an unpleasant surprise.

A leaker on Weibo says the OnePlus 13 with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage — probably the top-end configuration — will be priced at roughly $738 in China. That's a not-insignificant price increase over the OnePlus 12, which was $677 at launch in China. It was quite a bit higher in the U.S., though, starting at $800.
