Love Lies Bleeding (2024)

Love Lies Bleeding | Official Trailer HD | A24

A brilliant, strange, kind of beautiful crime romance, Love Lies Bleeding tells the story of a gym manager who falls for a female bodybuilder. As the couple get drawn further and further into the gym manager’s criminal family, they begin to worry that they’ll never be truly happy with one another.

Featuring two incredible performances from Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian, Love Lies Bleeding is not exactly the movie you might expect it to be. Replete with ’80s nostalgia, director Rose Glass manages to execute on a one-of-a-kind vision.

You can watch Love Lies Bleeding on Max.

The Purge: Election Year (2016)

The Purge: Election Year - Official Trailer (HD)

The Purge movie franchise has always been political, but Election Year makes those themes even more explicit. Crucially, though, the movie’s political elements are still secondary to what turns out to be a truly excellent action movie about a politician who wants to end purges once and for all.

The movie is tense and also does plenty to build out the universe of The Purge without feeling heavy handed. Election Year is well cast, features smart direction, and manages to be political without feeling either cloying or alienating.

You can watch The Purge: Election Year on Max.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992)

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) Trailer

It probably goes without saying that Fire Walk With Me doesn’t totally work unless you’ve already seen Twin Peaks. That series is very much worth watching, but Fire Walk With Me is fascinating all on its own.

The film is actually a prequel to Twin Peaks, and it tells the story of Laura Palmer, the young woman whose death is the impetus for the story of Twin Peaks. The movie recounts her final day alive, including the many double lives that she leads, and her terrifying relationship with the man who turns out to be her killer.

You can watch Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me on Max.

Richard Farnsworth in The Straight Story

While those titles are what brought many people in the door, they're not the only things available on the streaming service.

In fact, Disney+ is home to great movies of all kinds, and this month, we recommend you check out The Straight Story from 1999. The film follows an elderly man who has no other feasible mode of transportation, and so decides to ride his lawnmower 1,000 miles to see his sick brother.
