Netflix’s Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight hit with severe technical glitches

Netflix has been hyping up the Mike Tyson versus Jake Paul boxing match for months as one of the biggest streaming events in the company’s history. But if tonight’s performance is any indication of what Netflix’s sports streaming will look like, then the company is in trouble. From the start, the live stream has been hit with severe technical glitches, loss of sound, and very slow feeds during reload attempts.

The only good news so far is that Netflix hasn’t completely crashed. The glitch-filled performance suggests that Netflix successfully drew a large audience to stream the fight. But this isn’t the first time that Netflix’s streaming capabilities have been severely strained during a live broadcast. Fans on social media have been extremely vocal with their displeasure.

As of the writing of this post, the main event hasn’t started. So there’s still a chance that Netflix can salvage the broadcast if the Tyson versus Paul bout isn’t interrupted by any of these technical problems. But given the way that the evening has already gone, that seems unlikely.

This calls into question Netflix’s ability to pivot to live sports, including this year’s NFL Christmas games. And while WWE wrestling is not a sport, Netflix has also committed a large amount of money to begin streaming WWE Raw beginning in January 2025. That “sports entertainment” broadcast is regularly two to three hours long, and doesn’t have these kinds of problems on USA Network. If Netflix can’t figure out its live-streaming issues before Raw premieres, then the backlash from tonight’s Paul versus Tyson fight will pale in comparison.

The best movies on Amazon Prime Video (November 2024)
Ivana Baquero in Pan's Labyrinth.

Freevee may be going away, but Amazon Prime Video has always had a deeper library of hit movies to draw upon than its "free" streaming service. Even in slow weeks like this one, Prime Video still has movies like Pan's Labyrinth and Galaxy Quest to fall back on. Those are two very different films, but both are fantastic examples of their respective fantasy and sci-fi/comedy genres.

Prime Video is pretty action-heavy this month, with Mark Wahlberg's Infinite inexplicably hanging on near the top of the movie charts alongside another Prime Video original, Canary Black. Romance lovers may find more to like in My Old Ass or Silver Linings Playbook. Regardless of your tastes, this list of the best movies on Amazon Prime Video right now has something waiting for you.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie in Focus.

As we've often seen before, unexpected films from the past suddenly rise to the top of the list of the most popular movies on Netflix. The first six Fast and Furious films have also arrived on Netflix, which should make action lovers very happy. For this week, we're putting the spotlight on Fast Five because it's one of the best in the series, and it also featured the first face-off between Vin Diesel and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Netflix is also currently having a lot of success with the action rom-com The Lost City, as well as other recent arrivals, including Oblivion and Kung Fu Panda 4. You can find those films and more in our complete roundup of the best movies on Netflix right now.

The 50 best shows on Netflix in November 2024
The cast of Cobra Kai.

For a streamer that made its name on binge-watching, Netflix has really embraced the split-season model this year. That's why we have fresh episodes of Arcane this weekend, as well as new episodes of Cobra Kai. That Karate Kid sequel series has proven to be so popular that it's bound to hit No. 1 on the list of the most popular shows on Netflix now that Cobra Kai season 6, part 2 has arrived.

Netflix has also just added A.P. Bio, a sitcom that previously ran on NBC and Peacock. This is a show that never achieved the popularity it needed to last longer than four seasons. But if any streamer can revive interest in this series, it's Netflix.
