My favorite Xbox Series X model is on sale right now

Xbox Series X 1TB All-Digital console.
Microsoft

The Xbox Series X is one of Digital Trends’ favorite gaming consoles right now, and for good reason — the best Xbox Series X games rival lineups on other platforms, Game Pass is still an absolute steal and performs well compared to the PS5. If you’re looking to jump into the Xbox ecosystem or make a significant upgrade the Xbox you already have, there’s a holiday deal you need to know about.

New to the Xbox lineup this year is the Xbox Series X Digital 1TB, and it’s my favorite console in quite a while. You can buy a Xbox Series X Digital 1TB (and a new controller) at Best Buy right now for just $440. That’s a nice discount of about $70, or enough cash to buy a new game to go along with it.

Three New Xbox Series X|S Consoles - World Premiere Announce Trailer

If you’re in the market for a new Xbox on a budget, the Xbox Series X Digital 1TB fits the bill.  The lack of a disc drive knocks a bit off the retail price and doubling the storage of the standard Xbox Series S goes a long way with modern file sizes. Just take a look at how much storage some recently released games require:

Game file sizes are getting larger and larger, it seems. Most standard edition consoles can only handle a few games at a time, meaning you’re going to have to constantly manage your storage to try out new games. That’s less of a problem with the 1TB Xbox Series X.

I’ve been using the Xbox Series X Digital 1TB for a couple of months now and I’ve never played a wider variety of games. Instead of perusing the Game Pass library and having to debate whether a game is worth the effort to manage having on my console currently, I can just download and install game after game without thinking about it. If you’re looking to grab an Xbox Series X this year and want to spend more time playing games than you do managing storage, this is the model for you.

All cross-platform games (PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC)
Two squads of heroes clash in an Overwatch 2 trailer.

Cross-platform support is becoming more important in the world of video games. Multiplayer hits like Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 and Fortnite have pushed crossplay into the limelight, and now most AAA multiplayer games release with at least partial cross-platform support. Finding every cross-platform game is no easy feat, though, so we did the hard work to bring you a comprehensive list of games that support crossplay.

Unfortunately, there aren't any rules when it comes to crossplay, so each game handles the feature a little differently. To make matters more confusing, certain backward-compatible games on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X still support crossplay on the most recent hardware, even if there isn't an official release for that hardware.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to try this weekend (September 27-29)
Sombra's new look in Overwatch 2.

First-party games are finally getting the big, consistent presence on Xbox Game Pass that we've been hoping for. In September alone, Age of Mythology: Retold and Ara: History Untold have made their way into Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, while Overwatch 2 started to give a ton of benefits to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. This is bound to only continue ramping up in the coming months as games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 release and more back catalog Activision games come to the service. Simply put, there's going to be a lot to enjoy on Xbox Game Pass. That's why I recommend you check out two of these first-party games, as well as an underrated indie strategy game sequel. this weekend
Overwatch 2

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers should connect their account to Battle.net because a lot of perks for subscribers came to the free-to-play hero shooter Overwatch 2 earlier this month. Cardboard Reinhardt, Turtleship D.Va, Cyberdragon Hanzo, Street Runner Genji, Bee Mercy, and Cleric Lifeweaver skins, as well as 30 Mythic Prisms, can be permanently redeemed before November 11. A rotating collection of other cosmetics and a 10% XP boost are available indefinitely to Xbox Game Pass subscribers. You can access these perks across any platforms that Overwatch 2 is on, including PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.

Xbox is getting rid of its standalone Game Pass app
The Xbox Game Pass app on a phone that's displayed on a hardwood floor next to an Xbox controller.

All of Xbox's mobile features will soon be under just one app. Microsoft announced Wednesday that it'll be moving Game Pass features into the regular Xbox app for beta users starting this week.

This signals the end of Xbox Game Pass app as a separate entity. Game Pass functionality, like searching the catalog or grabbing perks for Game Pass Ultimate members, will be in the main Xbox app. The move also means the Game Pass app will no longer be available for new download beginning in November.
