Inventor of the computer mouse, Douglas Engelbart, dies at age 88

In the computing world, there are some people that we recognize daily for their revolutionary contributions. Take the late Steve Jobs for example, who was partially responsible for bringing us the Macintosh, iPhone, and iPad. Or, ask someone if they know what Bill Gates has done for tech, and they’ll be able to tell you that he’s one of the entrepreneurs behind the personal computer revolution. The point is, it’s easy to recall famous names when talking about certain major products in tech, but most of the time, lesser-known contributors fade into obscurity, even when they’re the ones responsible for something we use nearly every day, like the computer mouse.

Douglas Engelbart was one such inventor. Engelbart, who passed away on Tuesday, July 2 at the age of 88, brought us the computer mouse. In 1970, Engelbart received a patent for a wooden mouse with two wheels and three buttons – an ingenious device that let users control their PCs without having to enter DOS-commands and written codes. Without Engelbart’s creation, we’d all probably still be typing in commands on our PCs when we wanted to do something. And, chances are, computers wouldn’t be as popular since they wouldn’t be as easy to use.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak spoke to ABC News about Engelbart, explaining that the creator didn’t just invent the mouse, he also had ideas pertaining to the creation of the Internet well before its creation. “Everything we have in computers can be traced to his thinking,” Wozniak told ABC News. “To me, he is a god.” Wozniak went on to say that Engelbart did a lot for computer interfaces and networking, and also worked on ARPANET (the network of computers that came before the Internet). He also was one of the first to demonstrate on-screen teleconferencing. Wozniak said that Engelbart’s networking ideas were much more significant than the mouse. “He did this way before the Internet,” Wozniak said. “He was thinking about how computers could solve some of the main problems for mankind before many.”

The next time you place your hand on that computer mouse, remember the man responsible for it. Engelbart may not’ve been the most recognized face in the world of computing, but he was definitely an important cog in the machine. We salute you Engelbart, and thank you for your contribution to the tech world.

The next Snapdragon X chip will be even more powerful than we thought
The Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus

As part of Qualcomm's latest Investor Day, the company confirmed that its next PC chip, the Snapdragon X Elite Gen 2, will use the Oryon v3 CPU. This comes as a surprise to many, as the Oryon v2 was just announced last month alongside plans to use it with the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset for smartphones.

Since the current Snapdragon X Elite chip uses an Oryon v1 CPU, many assumed that the 2nd-gen chip would use the 2nd-gen CPU -- but it seems the PC chips will be skipping over this generation entirely.

The Windows 11 24H2 update is causing even more problems
Windows 11 logo on a laptop.

The Windows 11 24H2 update had already been giving users a real headache with problems such as bugs for visual layouts and flaws for certain wallpaper apps. And now, as Microsoft confirms in a support document, some people without administrative privileges can't change the time zone in the Date & Time view, among myriad other issues related to the important Windows 11 update.

A Feedback Hub post also reports a time issue after exiting Sleep Mode, specifically after about one out of every five overnight sleep cycles. There is also a report that the time is not syncing correctly following daylight saving time. Put differently, the update doesn't break the time zone, but only affects the toggle or makes it very difficult to modify it.
