iPad owners, listen up. If that Apple tablet of yours just doesn’t cut it anymore, if it’s starting to look tired and stale, if you’ve had it up to here with the whole Apple ecosystem thing, then how about trading it in for a Surface tablet?

No, honestly, this is for real – in its latest scheme to rid itself of unsold Surface devices, Microsoft is offering iPad owners the chance to trade in their tablet for a gift card worth at least $200, which it wants you to spend on a brand new you-know-what.

The deal is running at a number of the company’s US- and Canada-based retail stores until October 27. Hand over your “gently used” iPad 2, 3 or 4 to store clerks and, once they’ve been over it with a magnifying glass to evaluate how kindly you treated it, you’ll receive a gift card worth a minimum of $200. No maximum figure is mentioned by the Redmond-based company.

You can actually spend the gift card on anything at the Microsoft store, though the company makes it obvious in its sales pitch that it’d be more than delighted if you put it towards a $349 Surface RT or $799 Surface Pro.

But take note – Microsoft is gearing up to unveil the second iteration of its two 10.6-inch tablets at the end of this month, meaning they’re likely to hit stores soon after – say around October 28? In other words, any new Surface you pick up before October 27 will seem kinda old a few days later.

The computer company is pulling the wraps off the new devices on September 23, so if you are thinking about ditching your iPad for a Surface, you’d be best off waiting till then to learn more about launch dates for the new models.

Hard time

As if laying the groundwork for this latest offer, Microsoft released an ad last month showing why it thinks its Surface tablet beats the iPad.

However, the fact is the Surface tablets have had a hard time of it since hitting the market in the last year. The company said recently it’d taken a $900 million write-down on unsold Surface RT tablets despite various offers this year designed to entice consumers.

In June, the company even went as far as handing out thousands of RT tablets for nothing to the first 10,000 registrants at the International Society for Technology in Education conference in Texas, while more recently it offered free RT tablets to students who use Bing.

And last month it cut the price of the 32GB RT from $499 to $349, while the 64GB version dropped to $449 from $599.

Apple, meanwhile, sold over 14.5 million iPads in its most recent quarter and is expected to unveil the iPad 5 soon, possibly next month.

So, are you thinking of swapping your iPad for a Surface?

The 9th Gen iPad with Apple’s A13 Bionic chip is only $200 today
The iPad on a tablet displaying web content.

The Apple iPad has been a popular holiday item for several years now. With Cyber Monday officially here, we’re excited to see so many great iPad deals available. That leads us to this offer we found: For a limited time, when you purchase the 9th Gen iPad with A13 Bionic, you’ll only pay $200. At full price, this iPad sells for $480. We had the opportunity to test this model a while back, and our iPad expert had the following to say: “The iPad 10.2 (2021) is the best iPad you can buy today. There are few discernible upgrades over the previous two generations, but if you don't have one, this is the one to get. If you do, there's no point in upgrading.” If that's not a solid argument for grabbing this 9th Gen iPad deal, I don't know what is.

Why you should buy the 9th Gen iPad
Even though the A14 version of the iPad was released back in 2022, it’s not unusual for Apple to still sell the A13 version brand-new. And then, when holidays like Cyber Monday and Christmas roll around, the company knocks a few extra dollars off this 2021 device. Don’t be fooled either: the Apple A13 Bionic is an incredible chip that delivers a buttery smooth iPadOS experience, complete with fast load times, animations, and excellent media playback.

The Apple iPad (10th Gen) is down to $331 for Cyber Monday
Someone holding the yellow iPad (2022) in front of trees with orange, yellow leaves.

Are you ready? Cyber Monday is here and the deals are as green as ever. The Black Friday discount from Walmart on the Apple iPad (1oth Gen) is gone but the price is still low. The Wi-Fi, 64GB model is on sale for $331 (down from $349). It's not the most attractive Cyber Monday tablet deal that we've found but a discount is a discount. We're not sure for how long, though. Like with most Cyber Monday deals available, there's a chance that the offer disappears sooner than you think. If you want this device for a more affordable price than usual, we highly recommend buying soon.

Why you should buy the Apple iPad (10th Gen)
The Apple iPad (10th Gen), which was released in 2022, is the latest version of the base model of Apple's tablets. It's featured in our roundup of the best iPads as the one that you'd want to buy if you want to save some cash while still getting a great iPad. It's not as technically impressive as the sixth-generation Apple iPad Air, which tops that list, but the 10th-generation Apple iPad is about half the price while still delivering a really nice user experience with 2360 x 1640 resolution and 500 nits of brightness -- same as the sixth-generation Apple iPad Air -- on its slightly smaller 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display.

I got an Apple Pencil Pro for my new iPad and found a big problem

Apple has brought some impressive improvements to this year’s iPad lineup. From an “impossibly thin” and powerful M4 iPad Pro to the Apple Intelligence-equipped iPad mini 7, there’s something here for everyone.

However, one of the unsung heroes of the lineup is the new Apple Pencil Pro, an advanced stylus with several new gestures that work hand in hand with Apple’s tablets to make drawing, sketching, and even just scribbling notes more intuitive than ever.
