You’re running all wrong! The new My ASICS app tailors a running regime custom to you

For the past two years, running shoe maker ASICS has stealthily amassed a 400,000-strong army of runners who believe that the path to faster race times is through smarter, more efficient training programs that feature lower milage and more rest. And now the company is taking data-powered running to the next level with the latest version of its free iOS and Android app called My ASICS.

My ASICS 2.0, which updated last week, provides much more than run trackers that simply record running stats like distance, pace, route, and time. It does all that, too – but where My ASICS really jumps to the front of the pack is in the way it plans and forecasts runnings schedules. By combining seven years of performance training data from the company’s in-house Institute of Sport Science with user profile information, including running goals and the dates of upcoming races, My ASICS creates customized training plans for each runner.

“When you are creating your training plan, we ask you for your current ability, age, and gender. We grab those as parameters for an algorithm that we have for calculating your paces,” says Alex Mrvaljevich, who led development of My ASICS. “So your paces are actually mathematically calculated; they’re not parameters that we use to choose a stock plan.”

In the past, My ASICS runners who wanted a customized training plan had to log into the My ASICS website to set everything up. But with the update released last Friday, everything from sign-up to fine tuning personal training plans can be done from inside the app.

Once you’ve signed up and entered your goals, My ASICS will create a schedule for your running; place it on a calendar; and tell you when, how far, and how hard to run. The app will also remind you to run or ask you how your run went, depending on how you’ve set it up. It’s like having a your own coach analyzing and encouraging you right from your phone.

Mrvaljevich calls My ASICS an “adaptive” app, thanks to the built-in “performance curves” that “track your runs” as you try to keep up with your custom running plan. “If you are under or above the expected curve then we can throw you a message that will tell you that you’re crushing this plan, it’s too easy for you,” he says. “We recalibrate it, and we’ll propose to you what the pace would look like after recalibrating, and we’ll give you a new forecast and update it. The plans will continue to evolve as you’re running. So not only are the plans unique to the runner, they remain unique to the runner’s advancement.”

So far, the app appears to be doing its job. Mrvalijevich says that over 5 million runs have been recorded, and that 78 percent of the people who completed their plans have reached their goals. If there is a marathon in your future, or even a local 5K, My ASICS just may be the secret weapon of your success.

Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar displaying pace information.

The fitness world is littered with opportunities to buy tech aimed at enhancing your physical performance. No matter your sport of choice or personal goals, there's a deep rabbit hole you can go down. It'll cost plenty of money, but the gains can be marginal -- and can honestly just be a distraction from what you should actually be focused on. Running is certainly susceptible to this.

A few months ago, I ran my first-ever marathon. It was an incredible accomplishment I had no idea I'd ever be able to reach, and it's now going to be the first of many I run in my lifetime. And despite my deep-rooted history in tech, and the endless opportunities for being baited into gearing myself up with every last product to help me get through the marathon, I went with a rather simple approach.
