Samsung has just released one. It looks like LG is about to do the same. Apple might even get around to it eventually. That’s right, we’re talking about smartphones with curved displays.

Following LG’s announcement last week that it’s getting on with mass-production of the world’s first flexible OLED panel for smartphones, engadget on Sunday published what it claims to be press renders of the company’s forthcoming G Flex smartphone featuring the new technology.

In line with rumors from earlier this month, the site’s unnamed source says the handset will launch in November, though details regarding pricing and availability are currently unclear. Information on specifications is also lacking, though the device is known to have a 6-inch display, putting it firmly in phablet territory.

Recent reports did, however, suggest the device would come with a 1080p display and a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor.

If you’ve had a chance to check out what Samsung launched for the Korean market last week with its 5.7-inch Galaxy Round smartphone, you’ll notice from these images that LG’s handset bends the other way, from top to bottom, a design that should fit the face better than Samsung’s somewhat odd looking side-to-side offering. Which is more your style?

LG claims its curved 6-inch OLED panel is the world’s slimmest at 0.44mm, as well as the world’s lightest at 7.2 grams (0.25 oz). The South Korean tech company believes it’s onto a winner, forecasting rapid growth in the flexible-display market.

“The flexible-display market is expected to grow quickly as this technology is expected to expand further into diverse applications including automotive displays, tablets and wearable devices,” Dr. Sang Deog Yeo, LG’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, said recently. “Our goal is to take an early lead in the flexible display market by introducing new products with enhanced performance and differentiated designs next year.”

Future Android phones may come with another preinstalled Google app
The new Cardio Load and Readiness features in the Fitbit app.

If you have an Android phone, you know it comes with many preinstalled Google apps, such as Gmail, YouTube, and Google Maps. In future Android versions, another Google app might be automatically added to the mix.

As 9to5Google first noted, the Oppo Find X8 has Google’s Fitbit app preloaded on the device. It’s now part of Google’s Android app suite on that handset and replaces Google Fit. The site suggests, and probably rightly so, that more Android-based devices will also probably ship with Fitbit preinstalled in the future.
