Have you noticed compatibility issues between your McAfee software and your brand new Mac OS X Mavericks install? Apparently you’re not the only one.

A forum thread on the official McAfee page indicates that multiple people are reporting compatibility problems between their McAfee and Mavericks installs. One user reported that after installing Mac OS X Mavericks, their McAfee on-access scanner status read as “not working.” Two other Mavericks owners reported the same exact issue. All involved indicated that they were using McAfee Security 1.1.0 (1309) and McAfee Anti-Malware 9.1.0 (4778).

It didn’t take long for McAfee Product Manager Vineet Kumar to chime in with his own simple fix to the Mavericks-McAfee compatibility issues some users have been experiencing. Here’s what he had to say.

“McAfee Internet Security v3.1 supports Mavericks. Please upgrade.”

Since then, the thread has died down, leading us to assume that upgrading your McAfee software to McAfee Internet Security v3.1 blossoms into a harmonious relationship between Mavericks and McAfee. However, if you find yourself wanting to ditch McAfee and you’re wondering if there are any other alleged Mavericks-ready security programs out there, apparently you have at least one option.

AVAST Software, makes of avast! Free Antivirus, claims that avast! Free Antivirus 8.0 Build 39915 is Mavericks-compatible. As its name implies, avast! Free Antivirus doesn’t cost you a dime. In our experience with avast!, we never endured any crushing system failures as a result of viruses, though our avast! usage primarily took place on Windows 7 PCs. We did experience conflicts between avast! and our free ZoneAlarm Firewall install, but ZoneAlarm isn’t available for OS X, so that solves that problem.
