Currently attempting to raise money through a private crowdfunding campaign, the Vybe smart bracelet is a device that provide vibration notifications when the bracelet owner receives a text message or phone call on their smartphone. Designed to help people avoid missing important calls, a Vybe owner can put their phone down to charge on the opposite side of their home without worry. The creators of the bracelet have also included a button on the device that allows someone to reject an incoming call if they choose.
Due to the constant Bluetooth 4.0 connection between the bracelet and the smartphone, the device also acts as a security tool for forgetful smartphone owners. If the bracelet travels more than 50 feet away from the smartphone, the Vybe starts vibrating intensely in order to alert the user of the missing phone. This could also be useful if a smartphone is stolen without the owner’s knowledge. The bracelet is compatible with the iPhone 4S and higher as well as Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone devices that support Bluetooth 4.0.
Regarding battery life, the Vybe’s lithium ion battery charges over micro USB in under two hours and should last for approximately four days under normal use. While the Vybe is designed to be worn around the wrist, the creators of the device also sell an extender that allows users to wear it around their ankle; ideal for runners.
Competing with the basic functionality of a smartwatch, the Vybe will be offered at a much more affordable price than a device like the Pebble. Early backers can preorder the Vybe at $39 and the flexible smart bracelet bands come in seven different colors. There are also options to purchase bands separately. The creators of Vybe are promising that all preorders will ship by February 28, 2014 or backers will receive their money back. That’s a rather unique position to take within the crowdfunding community, especially since the majority of Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaigns that promise products on a specific month typically get delayed due to manufacturing issues or other problems.
