These Subaru STI renderings are the greatest thing Belgium has created since waffles

The 2015 Subaru WRX is about to be unveiled next week at the 2013 LA Auto Show. In preparation for the event, Subaru put out a teaser picture, which was quickly followed by a supposed ‘leaked’ production renderings.

Like I said in the original posting, I don’t know if they’re real. Frankly, I don’t really care. They’re fantastic looking.

Some Belgian Subaru nerds at autofans.be decided to go one step further and put in a couple hours in Photoshop with those WRX renderings, creating a digital mockup of what the next STI might look like. The result has left my mouth agape.

I realize, unlike the WRX renderings, the next-gen STI images have no chance of displaying the genuine article. Regardless, they’re spot on.

In the front, they’ve widened the lower air intakes and beefed up the wheel and tire combo. And in the back, they’ve virtually bolted up the iconic honkin’ real wing. Finishing it off, they slapped on the requisite STI badging and slathered the thing in WRC blue paint.

Subaru had said that the next STI would not be offered in hatchback form. This worried me a bit, as I loved the aesthetics of the current-gen STI in its five-door form. If the next STI looks anything like the Belgian rendering, though, I’ll be completely sold.

Of course there’s no telling what the Belgians imagine will lie under the hood. I, however, am hoping for a version of Suby’s new, direct injected 2.0-liter bored-out to 2.5-liters topped off with a massive turbo. The current STI makes 305 horsepower. I’d like the next-gen to make no less than 320 hp.

A boy can hope, can’t he?

We won’t know any production specs – or see any official images – of the next STI for some time. Delightfully, we’ll see the 2015 WRX in just a few days when we’re on the show floor at the 2013 LA Auto Show.

If you’re half as big a WRX fan as I am, you’ll definitely want to check back for more 2015 WRX info. Hopefully, while at the show, I’ll be able to drag some more info out of the Subaru brass surrounding the new STI.

Mini’s infotainment system is very charming, but still needs work
Main screen of the Mini infotainment system

When you think Mini, you probably don’t think of infotainment. Personally, I think of the British flag taillights, the distinct exterior, and the surprising room on the inside. But after driving the Mini John Cooper Works Countryman over the past week, infotainment might well be something I think of more often when it comes to Mini. It’s charming.

It also, however, suffers from all the traps that other legacy automakers fall into when it comes to software design. Mini has something on its hands here — but it still needs some work.
Bringing the charm
The first thing that stood out to me about the system when I got in the car was how fun it was. That all starts with the display. It’s round! No, it’s not curved — the screen is a big, round display sits in at 9.4 inches, and I found it plenty large enough for day-to-day use.

Plug-in hybrids are becoming more popular. Why? And will it continue?
Kia Niro EV Charging Port

There's a lot of talk about the idea that the growth in electric car sales has kind of slowed a little. It's not all that surprising -- EVs are still expensive, early adopters all have one by now, and they're still new enough to where there aren't too many ultra-affordable used EVs available. But plenty of people still want a greener vehicle, and that has given rise to an explosion in hybrid vehicle sales.

That's especially true of plug-in hybrid vehicles, which can be charged like an EV and driven in all-electric mode for short distances, and have a gas engine as a backup for longer distances or to be used in combination with electric mode for more efficient driving.

Nearly all current owners of electric vehicles (EVs) are either satisfied or very satisfied with the experience, and 92% of them plan to buy another EV, according to a survey by the Global EV Drivers Alliance.

The survey of 23,000 EV drivers worldwide found that only 1% would return to a petrol or diesel car, while 4% would opt for a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) if they had to replace their car.
