The smartphone industry is desperate to prompt a change, and is exploring everything from brand-new operating systems to modular smartphone hardware in order to bring one about. We, as consumers, are also always looking for something new, and if the thought of a Jolla phone or the Motorola Ara project just doesn’t pique your interest, how about building your own phone? David Mellis, a PhD student at MIT, has released the plans for you to do just that, and it’s like a retro version of Motorola’s Moto Maker for mad scientists.

Now, before you get too excited, the phone you’ll be making won’t challenge the Galaxy S4 in terms of tech, or the iPhone 5S for looks. In fact, it ‘ll struggle to match a $25 feature phone. It will, though, be something you’ve built yourself. Mellis is better known as one of the co-founders of the Arduino project, an open source electronics platform beloved by geeky tinkerers everywhere, and his DIY phone is built around a GSM phone add-on for it.

DIY Phone ComponentsOnce equipped with the circuit board, you add a screen – either a a basic eight-character red LED, or a monochrome six line LCD from a feature phone – and all the other components, program the device and finally, build a case. In the photos, the DIY phone is shown with a wooden body shell, complete with laser cut keys, and some 3D printed examples. Pop a SIM card inside and you can make and receive calls, send text messages, and potentially access the Internet using a 2G connection.

Mellis said, in an interview during the summer, he was interested in looking at alternatives to mass production for all types of electronic hardware, and the phone is one part of his thesis. He has released the plans for the DIY phone, and calls the project , “Difficult, but potentially do-able.” You’re going to need some specialist tools, be good at fine hand soldering, and have a considerable amount of patience if you’re keen to give it a try.

The final cost of the DIY phone is estimated to be around $200, which doesn’t sound too bad for the amount of satisfaction you’ll have at the end of it. Those of us without the technical know-how to build one, will just enjoy the fact the DIY phone exists at all, and probably pop out to buy a Moto G.

I know, I know, you've probably been inundated with a ton of early Black Friday deals. Me too. But continuing with some more ESR deals, this time we're back with something a little different. Where before, you were looking at great deals on cases for Apple's devices. Here, we're looking at cases for the iPad and AirPods. With the iPad, it adds a bit of functionality, like doubling as a rotating stand for hands-free viewing. The AirPod case, on the other hand, supports MagSafe charging but offers ultimate drop protection to your earbuds and their wireless charging case. Let's take a closer look.

The future of the Google Pixel Tablet doesn’t look good
Google Pixel Tablet on its charging dock.

Google’s Pixel lineup has been pretty solid lately -- at least, for most of its hardware, anyway. But there’s one Google Pixel device that seems to have flopped so hard that it may end up being a one-off thing, and that’s the Pixel Tablet.

If you’re hoping to hear some news about a proper Pixel Tablet 2, we have some bad news. According to a recent report from Android Headlines, it seems that Google has already canceled plans for a Pixel Tablet 3. But wait! Another report on Android Authority claims that it was actually the Pixel Tablet 2 that was canned, not the Pixel Tablet 3. Considering that you can’t have a third iteration before having a second, I think it’s safe to say that whatever the next version was going to be, we’re not going to see it — at least not for a while.

My favorite smartphone camera of 2024 isn’t made by Apple or Google
A person holding the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

When I needed to take photos of a car for a series of stories this month, only one phone came to mind, and it wasn’t one of the top devices made by Google, Samsung, or Apple. It’s the fantastic Xiaomi 14 Ultra, and over the course of a few days, it cemented its place as my favorite camera phone of 2024. Here’s why.
Why is it the best?
The Xiaomi 14 Ultra Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

I already held the Xiaomi 14 Ultra’s camera in high regard after having reviewed the phone and tested it out against other cameras. I especially loved the versatility of the brilliant Photography Kit accessory. But most of this happened earlier on in the year before other brands had the chance to release serious competitors. I knew I had to give it another try, just to be sure of my feelings.
