The PlayStation 4 is now up to roughly 2.1 million consoles sold to customers worldwide, following its launch on November 29 in Europe, Australia, and Latin America, Sony confirms. That second launch – which included the biggest console release in UK history – accounted for around 700,000 sales worldwide, with the rest coming from the console’s North American release on November 15, including over 1 million units sold in the first 24 hours. All together, the PlayStation 4 is now available in 32 countries, with several launches throughout Asia scheduled throughout December, culminating with the Japanese launch on February 22.
“PS4′s North American debut on 15th November was PlayStation’s largest ever, with more than one million gamers picking up a PS4 in just 24 hours,” Sony Computer Entertainment President and CEO Andrew House said in a prepared statement. “Now, with PS4′s global launch expanding to a total of 32 countries worldwide, including Europe and Latin America, I’m proud to announce that more than 2.1 million PS4s have been sold.”
All of this success happened despite Sony losing two key launch titles – the console-exclusive Driveclub and the multi-platform Watch Dogs – to development delays. Both of those games will arrive in 2014, along with other highly anticipated titles like Infamous: Second Son, The Order: 1866, and the debut of Sony’s Gaikai-powered game streaming, which will bring PlayStation 3 favorites to the PS4, PS3, and PS Vita.
