Although actor Anna Paquin filmed a scene for the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, she will not appear in the film following a brutal editing process. According to director Bryan Singer who spoke with Entertainment Weekly, the scene she appeared in just wasn’t necessary.
“Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous,” the director said. “It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.”
The scene reportedly features a rescue of some kind involving Paquin’s character of Rogue, Iceman, Magneto, and Xavier. Beyond that though, the details are being kept quiet. The last time Paquin appeared as Rogue was in X-Men: The Last Stand, where she seemed to have lost her powers after receiving a “cure.” As with the comics they are based on though, there are several ways this could be easily resolved.
Singer was quick to emphasize that the decision had nothing at all to do with Paquin herself, who was on set less than a week. That means she may still appear as Rogue in the next film that the director recently teased featuring the villain Apocalypse.
X-Men: Days of Future Past will hit theaters on May 23, 2014.
