Thief decides chunky old flip phone isn’t worth stealing, gives it back to owner

It seems chunky old phones are now so undesirable, even thieves can’t be bothered with them anymore. The New York Post tells the story of Kevin Cook, who was walking through Central Park with a friend late at night on December 28, when he was accosted by two muggers, one of whom threatened him with a gun.

Demands were made for Cook and his friend to hand over their phones and, presumably, anything else of value; so a three-year old phone running Windows was given to the thief. According to Cook, the scumbag examined the device, said, “What the f**k is this?” and handed it back. Despite having a gun waved in his face, Cook sees the funny side of all this, and told the Post, “I guess he didn’t think he could get anything for it.”

Samsung i600 FlipAlthough the exact model of phone refused by the mugger isn’t mentioned, it’s described as being a flip phone running Windows Mobile. If that’s the case, we can see why the thief swore, as if it’s anything like the hideous, Verizon-only Samsung i600, we wouldn’t want it either.

Kidding aside, phone thefts are a serious problem. However, it’s hoped a new stolen phone database, which has recently been completed by the four major U.S. networks, will help cut down phone crime. Linked to existing databases in Europe and elsewhere in the world, it’ll make it much more difficult for stolen phones to be reactivated, and therefore less attractive to thieves.

Going back to Cook’s story, it proves the tip of carrying a second, cheap phone to hand over in the event of a mugging could actually work. What’s more, if the phone is really rubbish, you may even walk away with both of them still in your pocket.

Future Android phones may come with another preinstalled Google app
The new Cardio Load and Readiness features in the Fitbit app.

If you have an Android phone, you know it comes with many preinstalled Google apps, such as Gmail, YouTube, and Google Maps. In future Android versions, another Google app might be automatically added to the mix.

As 9to5Google first noted, the Oppo Find X8 has Google’s Fitbit app preloaded on the device. It’s now part of Google’s Android app suite on that handset and replaces Google Fit. The site suggests, and probably rightly so, that more Android-based devices will also probably ship with Fitbit preinstalled in the future.
