If you’re looking for an action camcorder, you’re usually left with small POV models as options. But JVC has adapted the Quad-Proof structure from its Addixxion line of rugged POV camcorders in two new full-size Everio camcorders, the GZ-R70 and GZ-R10.
The two camcorders have a water resistance of 16.4 feet, shockproof of 4.9 feet, freezeproof down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and dustproof. While you can’t go deep sea diving with it, you can use it in rain or snow – great for travel, since you can use it in almost any environment. Using it in the pool should be OK too.
Unlike rugged POV cams, you get more shooting capabilities like a traditional camera. The Everios have a 40x optical zoom and a Konica Minolta HD lens, 2.5-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, audio that zooms with the picture, and 4.5 hours of battery life. Video capture is up to Full HD 1080 at 60p. JVC says its Falconbrid high-speed video and audio processor delivers great image and sound quality, with an algorithm that cuts out wind and noise. There’s a 3-inch touchscreen LCD, and both camcorders shoot 10-megapixel stills.
Besides price (the GZ-R70 is $500, and the GZ-R10 is $400), the differences between the two are internal memory capacity (the R70 has 32GB flash memory built in, while the R10 doesn’t have any), an LED light on the R70, and color options on the R10 (black, blue, and red); otherwise both cameras look identical. The R70 will be available in April, and the R10 in March.
