Game Goliaths Blizzard and Activision Merge

Game Goliaths Blizzard and Activision Merge

In what could easily be described as one of the most significant mergers to hit the video game industry, major developers Blizzard and Activision announced plans for a merger on Sunday. Blizzard’s French parent company, Vivendi, will swallow up Activision in a deal that will put some of the most popular modern games, including World of Warcraft and Guitar Hero, under one roof.

All pieces of the deal, including the values of both companies and cash contributed by each toward the deal, add up to $18.9 billion. Vivendi paid $27.50 per share for Activision, 24 percent more than it was trading for on Friday, to acquire a 52 percent stake in the company. Shares of the new company’s stock will trade on the Nasdaq for $27.50 per share.

With $3.8 billion in combined revenue for 2007, the new company could represent the next biggest independent game developer, a title usually chalked up to Electronic Arts, which produced $3.7 billion in revenue this year.

Blizzard is well known for its best-selling PC game franchises, such as World of Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo. Activision has a stronger presence in console games, with titles like Guitar Hero, Call of Duty and Tony Hawk.

Activision has ‘heard the demand’ for more Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater

On September 29, the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series will turn 25 years old. Released in 1999 for the original PlayStation, the Pro Skater games would leave an everlasting mark on the video game industry and skateboarding culture. Not only would they create a long-lasting series for Activision, but they would also popularize extreme sports games, open the doors for the use of licensed music in games, and create an on-ramp to skating culture for a whole generation. Over the last 25 years, the series has gone through lots of ups and downs, with its most recent release being 2020's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, a remaster of the first two games in the series.

Since then, it has been quiet on the Pro Skater front outside of a cameo in Astro Bot, but Activision is using its 25th anniversary to reassure fans that it recognizes the series' importance. In an exclusive interview with Digital Trends, Activision Chief Operating Officer Josh Taub said that the company has "heard the demand" for more Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and still considers the series one of its important core franchises in 2024.

Overwatch 2 is now on Xbox Game Pass, and it comes with perks
Overwatch 2 skins: Cardboard Reinhardt, Turtleship D.Va, Cyberdragon Hanzo, Street Runner Genji, Bee Mercy, and Cleric Lifeweaver

Blizzard Entertainment surprise dropped Overwatch 2 on Xbox Game Pass on Tuesday, despite the game being free to play and already on Xbox.

You might find this to be a strange addition, but as a Blizzard blog post specifies, this is more about encouraging players to link their Battle.net and Xbox accounts. As a reward, players that do so will receive six exclusive skins: Cardboard Reinhardt, Turtleship D.Va, Cyberdragon Hanzo, Street Runner Genji, Bee Mercy, and Cleric Lifeweaver. (The image of a Reinhardt in a cardboard suit is delightful.) Players will also get 30 Mythic Prisms that they can use in the Mythic Shop for other skins.
