The forthcoming March system update for the Xbox One corrects a lot of what’s wrong with the current party system, as Microsoft Chief Product Officer Marc Whitten confirms in a new Xbox Wire post. The update is meant to prepare the console for the multiplayer-focused Titanfall from Respawn Entertainment, which arrives on March 11.

Here’s a rundown of the added or tweaked features that you can expect to see next month, ripped straight from Whitten’s post:

  • Get to your friends list faster: The friends list will be front and center on the homepage of the Friends app. Click the Social tile on Home, or say “Xbox, go to Friends” to see who’s online and what they’re up to. From there you can quickly send messages and get into a party.
  • Party chat will be turned on by default: When you party up, chat audio will be turned on by default.
  • Chat with friends playing different games: Party chat will be separated from people playing your game, so you can chat with your friends who are online or you can chat with everyone playing the game.
  • We’re adding an “Invite friends to game” option to your multiplayer titles moving forward: Similar to Xbox 360 titles, this will appear inside a games’ menu and offer a simple and quicker way to set up your multiplayer battles. Selecting “Invite friends” will let you invite friends to your game and party.
  • We’re adding “Recent Players:” This is a simple list that shows you Xbox Live members you’ve recently played with, making it easier to stay in touch with people, or add new friends after your multiplayer battles.

The March update was first revealed last week when Whitten took to Xbox Wire to share the details of February’s update. The earlier post said the party/multiplayer update would be out on March 4, but in the latest post Whitten simply writes that it’s coming in “early March.” He also notes that there may be other new features as well, and that we’ll hear more about it in the coming weeks. Whatever the final date ends up being, you can bet the update will happen before Titanfall drops on March 11.

Xbox console sales are down as services take over
The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S getting splashed with water.

While Xbox continues to grow its software and content business thanks to the Activision Blizzard acquisition, the hardware side isn't doing quite as well. That's according to Microsoft's fourth-quarter financial report released Tuesday, which revealed that Xbox's hardware revenue dropped by 42% compared to this time last year. It didn't reveal exact numbers, but hardware was down 13% in its fourth-quarter 2023 financials compared to the previous year.

Hardware's downward trend isn't as big a deal when the company has been all in on expanding its other services, like Xbox Game Pass and Cloud Gaming. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella highlighted in the earnings call that Xbox's expansion to other platforms like Amazon TV is a part of the strategy to "expand from there so that we have content for everywhere people play games, starting with the PC." In general, revenue from content and services increased by 61%, boosted by the Activision Blizzard acquisition.

This is your last chance to get some heavily discounted Xbox 360 games

Microsoft announced last year that it would be shutting down the Xbox 360 Marketplace at the end of July, but it's not over just yet. Xbox is running a massive fire sale on a number of games, with some going as low as $1.

Players won't be able to purchase any products through the storefront after it goes offline on July 29. While you can still download and play games you already own, you won't be able to watch movies or TV since the Movies & TV app will also stop working on that date. That means now is your last chance to fill up your library.

Xbox Live is down, so you can’t sign into your Xbox account

Xbox Live experienced a major sign-in outage Tuesday afternoon that made it impossible to log into your Xbox profile to play games online.

I noticed it after attempting to sign into my Xbox Live account on my Xbox Series X. I got an error message telling me to "try again in a while." A quick glance at X (formerly Twitter) confirmed that I was not the only person to have this issue. "We are aware that some users have been disconnected from Xbox Live. We're investigating! Please follow here and on our status page for updates," the official X account for Xbox Support tweeted.
