Woman Seeks $54 Million for Missing Laptop

Some people value their computers more than others. For Raeyln Campbell, a Washington D.C. resident whose laptop went missing while in for repairs at Best Buy last May, the computer and the battles she fought trying to be reimbursed for it were enough to begin a crusade. Campbell has filed a suit for $54 million against Best Buy, not to recoup the true value of the computer, but to draw attention to what she calls the “reprehensible state of consumer property and privacy protection practices at America’s largest consumer electronics retailer.”

According to the blog that Campbell has dedicated to the issue, the problem began when Best Buy refused to reimburse her adequately for the theft of her computer, offering $750 for the machine (which Campbell claims originally cost $1110.35) and $150 for its content. In August 2007, Campbell demanded the original purchase price plus $1,000 to cover the music, pictures, software and other content on it. Best Buy denied her proposal, sparking the beginning of an escalating legal to-and-fro that lead to a suit for $54,592,146.54 in November.

The breakdown of the dollar amount includes $24,146.54 in compensatory damages for expenses that arose from the loss and replacement of the laptop, $500,000 in treble damages for Best Buy’s alleged negligence, and $54,000,000 in punitive damages, which Campbell hopes will draw the attention of both Best Buy and the media. The case flew low on radar until this week, when media outlets ranging from the Wall Street Journal to Fox News picked up the story.

Although Campbell has chronicled her communications with Best Buy on the blog, the company has not yet publicly commented on the case in light of its recent publicity.

5 laptop deals you can’t afford to miss this 4th of July
online learning

Bargain hunters know that the 4th of July is the best time of the year (besides Black Friday, of course) to score the biggest discounts on the latest techs and gadgets. We've done the hard work for you and gathered the absolute best laptop deals that we can find this Independence Day. Get the Apple MacBook Air, Asus Zenbook 14, Dell XPS 13, and HP 14-DK1003DX and HP Envy x360 laptops today starting from just $240.
HP 14-DK1003DX
– $240, was $290

No one would mistake the HP 14-DQ1038wm for a high-end laptop. Its chassis is made entirely of plastic with nary a premium material in sight. However, it does seem sturdy, with minimal flexing on the keyboard deck and lid when pressure is applied to it. When it comes to performance, it’s going to meet your basic laptop requirements (typing documents, creating a presentation, streaming videos and movies, emailing, and similar uses). Its AMD Athlon 3000 processor is capable of handling normal computing tasks but will get bogged down by processor-heavy programs. Its full HD display is a delight, though, packed with 1,366 x 768 pixels. It’s not the brightest screen out there and definitely has some bad viewing angles, but the ability to watch YouTube and Netflix videos in glorious high-definition is a huge plus. Those looking for a reliable but cheap 14-inch laptop should seriously consider the HP 14-DK1003DX. Right now, it’s available at Best Buy for the incredibly low price of $240 instead of the usual $290 – that’s $50 in savings.

Lenovo IdeaPad 1 Laptop
— $200, was $230

Starting off strong with one of the most affordable laptops out there is Lenovo with their IdeaPad 1. It’s not only light on the wallet, but also your back, weighing in at only 3.09 pounds. The 14-inch screen is optimal for portability without sacrificing too much display real estate. It is powered by an AMD A6-9220e processor with 4GB of RAM and an integrated AMD Radeon R4 graphics chipset, which may seem a bit lackluster, but for the user who only needs a portable computer to write up documents, organize files, and browse the internet, this is definitely what you need. It can’t handle heavy multitasking, gaming, or multimedia editing though, so if that’s what you need, then we suggest opting for another option on our list.

I tried the RayNeo Air 2s glasses and they’re on sale for Black Friday
RayNeo Air 2s on custom Steam Deck - Briley Kenney Digital Trends_edited

With the holidays coming, I've been trying a spat of unique VR and AR devices. One pair I got my hands on, called the RayNeo Air 2s, basically gives you a portable 201-inch display that you can put on and use anytime, anywhere. They work with Android, Mac, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and -- my favorite -- Steam Deck. Our team has used the RayNeo Air 2 previously and also gave them high marks. Fun Fact I learned from reading that, RayNeo is actually a TCL brand. As for what I think of them, we'll get to that. For now, I want to talk about the crazy RayNeo Black Friday deals that have just dropped.
