Westinghouse Packs DVD into 40-inch HDTV

Westinghouse may not be the most-recognized name in the flat-panel television game, but they’re doggedly trying to appeal to consumers who want straightforward, multi-functional entertainment. The new VK-40F580D tries to appeal to folks who want things simple, combining a 40-inch 1080p LCD flat-panel television with an integrated slot-loading DVD player and two HDMI inputs that can automatically detect when an external video source is activated.

The VK-40F580D offers a 1,920 by 1,080-pixel resolution, an integrated NTSC/ATSC/ClearQAM tuner, and can function as a PC display at a variety of resolutions. The display touts an 1,800:1 contrast ratio, a 176° viewing angle, and an 8ms response time. The unit also features deep calibration capabilities and a series of preset video modes that customize the display to particular purposes like movies and gaming. The integrated slot-loading DVD player does not offer upscaling—so you’ll be seeing ordinary “DVD-quality”—but it does offer Westinghouse’s PixelDirect technology that puts DVD video to the display on a direct path, so you don’t have to worry about supposedly-intelligent video processing messing up your content. The unit also features two video inputs, antenna and component inputs, analog and S/PDIF audio output, all mounted using Westinghouse’s “SpineDesign” so users don’t have to muck around behind the unit: all ports are accessible on the sides.

Hurry! 40-inch TCL TV still discounted to $160 for Black Friday
40 inch tcl deal best buy black friday 2020 4k tv 3 series

The Best Buy Black Friday deals haven't slowed down yet. From blenders to smart TVs, the retailer isn't showing signs of slowing down discounts any time soon. They've even kept the TCL 40-inch Class 3-Series Full HD Smart Android TV on sale for $160 -- a healthy and tempting $40 discount on a wildly popular product.

A discount on any smart TV is noteworthy, and especially one that's already available for such an affordable price. Although it's not the most high-tech or high-resolution TV on the market, it's still a relatively big smart TV from a fast and reliable retailer. But, like all Black Friday deals, it's destined to expire soon, so you'll want to act fast and buy now while it stays at such a cheap price.

The Samsung The Premiere projector set up in a living room.

Samsung isn’t attending IFA 2020, but that hasn’t stopped the tech giant from trying to steal the show anyways.

At its virtual “Life Unstoppable” press conference, Samsung announced The Premiere, a 4K projector with an ultra short-throw design and laser technology -- the company calls it the “new anchor product” in Samsung’s Lifestyle product portfolio, which also includes The Frame, The Sero, and The Terrace.

The Samsung S90C is the best OLED for the price right now
Samsung S90C

This time of year, the amount of news proclaiming the "best deal ever"or, yes, I'll throw myself in there with "best OLED TV to buy right now," can be a bit overwhelming. But it would be a disservice to not highlight the incredible pricing on the Samsung S90C. I've been living with the S90C for the better part of 2024, and even at it's regular sale price, it's worth it. It's one of my first recommendations to anyone that asks what TV to get. The fact that you can now get a 65-inch OLED for $1,000 is ridiculous.

When the Samsung S90C was originally released, it was in direct competition with the LG C3, the dominant OLED TV series. Year in and year out, the LG C Series was the sensible -- and really only -- midrange OLED worth talking about. But then QD-OLED came along and LG suddenly had strong competition that could match its black level performance. While their pricing was on par at release, right now the LG C3 is still a few hundred dollars more than the S90C. For even more context, the Hisense U8N, one of our favorite midrange LED TVs, is only $100 less. That Hisense might be brighter than the Samsung, but the S90C beats it in all other ways.
