Nintendo Shows off New Wii Titles

Seemingly secure of its sales dominance in the console market for the time being, Nintendo’s E3 press conference offered few new surprises for the Wii’s growing legion of fans. Having already revealed the new WiiMotion hardware on Monday, Nintendo made its exclusive Wii Sports Resort and Wii Music titles the main attractions at its press event.

As a sequel to Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort will stick with the tried-and-true formula of many mini games in a single package. However, rather than sticking with more pedestrian sports, Resort will step into more interesting fare with games like Power Cruising (riding a jet ski), Disc Dog (throwing a Frisbee to a dog) and Sword Play (self explanatory). Since the games will require more finesse than the original Wii Sports, Nintendo will bundle the game with the WiiMotion, which provides more accuracy in the Wii remotes.

Wii Music will follow in the steps of games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band with rhythm-based game play, but will take advantage of the Wii remote’s flexibility to offer players a choice of 60 different instruments. True to Nintendo’s casual gaming bent, it’s also free from the possibility to lose: players just get together and make music, there’s no challenge to fail at.

Nintendo says the Wii Music will go on sale before Christmas, while Wii Sports Resort will come out in the spring.

Nintendo’s new M-rated murder mystery already has me hooked

On August 29, Nintendo will release its most surprising game in decades. Emio -- The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is an unlikely revival of an NES visual novel series that hasn't had a new entry since 1989. That's not even the shocking part: It's an M-rated game about a masked serial killer. It's certainly not the kind of game you're expecting from Nintendo, especially in 2024.

That wasn't always the case, though. While Nintendo has a kid-friendly reputation these days, it has occasionally dabbled in darker projects over its long career. Just look back at the GameCube's Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, a gory horror game that Nintendo published. Emio is a throwback in more ways than one, both bringing back an old series and an older version of Nintendo willing to experiment with new audiences.

After a cryptic tease from host Geoff Keighley prior to the event, Techland showed up to Gamescom Opening Night Live to reveal the next entry in the open-world zombie franchise, Dying Light: The Beast. This will be a full, open-world sequel said to be around 20 hours in length.

Techland's Dying Light franchise began in 2015 with the original title and its sequel in 2022. With how much DLC support that first game got, many expected the sequel would receive the same treatment; however, Dying Light: The Beast will be a standalone entry in the franchise.
