Fanatec Stand Locks Down Racing Wheels

Fanatec Stand Locks Down Racing Wheels

As anyone who has ever attempted to use one can attest, the main problem with realistic racing wheels and pedals for video games comes down to where to mount them. Nobody likes it when the table gets knocked over and the pedals skid out from underneath you in the heat of racing action. To that end, German peripheral developer Fanatec has developed its own solution: the RennSport Wheel Stand.

Designed for gamers who play console racing games from the couch or other seated positions, the Fanatec stand locks the steering wheel into a sturdy pedestal and the pedals onto a solid, non-slip base, allowing anxious racers to stomp, slam and spin their racing hardware ‘til heart’s content.  It’s steel and aluminum design also adjusts for the proper wheel angle, height, and pedal position.

“The RennSport Wheel Stand is a strategic product that solves the fundamental dilemma of the racing fan,” said Thomas Jackermeier, CEO of Fanatec’s parent company, Endor AG. “Our stand makes playing racing games with a racing wheel much more realistic and fun.”

The RennSport stand will debut in the United States for $130 on October 30. It will function with any of Fanatec’s own racing wheels, as well as those from Logitech and Microsoft. Fanatec also plans to release an optional accessory mount for shifters, and a racing seat, in mid 2009.

Kunitsu-Gami devs break down the secret to Capcom’s new success
Soh, Yoshiro, and Villagers prepare for battle in Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess.

The video game industry is in a period of contraction. Companies like Bungie are canceling games and laying off developers so they can home in and focus on one or two big titles. Why invest in smaller, riskier projects when making larger games in well-known franchises will yield greater returns? Capcom, on the other hand, is committed to doing both.

"I believe that the experience with a series or remake is important, but the experience of a new IP is also important," Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess Director Shuichi Kawata told me in an email interview following the release of one of Capcom's more experimental new games yet.

Meta shuts down Ready at Dawn, one of its biggest VR studios
A robot and a woman in an orange space suit in a space ship.

Ready at Dawn Studios has been shut down after more than 20 years developing games for platforms like the PSP and the Meta Quest (formerly Oculus Rift).

The company, which had been working on the Lone Echo VR series for parent company Oculus Studios, is closing effective immediately. According to Android Central, which broke the news (former workers confirmed the shutdown on LinkedIn), the cuts were to "ensure that Reality Labs stays within the new budgetary constraints and that Oculus Studios can make a 'better long-term impact' in VR development." The parent company is also encouraging laid off workers to apply to other jobs within Oculus Studios.
