Nintendo DSi Launching Overseas in mid-2009

Nintendo DSi Launching Overseas in mid-2009

The new Nintendo DSi handheld gaming system (Japanese) is set to go on sale in Japan tomorrow for ¥18,900, adding on-board cameras and music capabilities to the popular gaming platform. The DSi will also support a “DSi Shop” that will sell applications, content, and games directly to DSi users via it’s integrated Wi-Fi connection.

Nintendo hadn’t announced any definite plans for offering the Nintendo DSi outside of Japan, save to note that they expected to bring the unit to other markets in 2009. Now, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says the company plans to launch the DSi overseas by “summer 2009,” noting in a meeting with press and analysts that a n autumn or year-end launch of the device would be “too late.”

The Nintendo DS handheld has been a very strong seller for the company over the years, dominating the handheld gaming market since its launch. From April to September of 2008, Nintendo moved 13.73 million Nintendo DS units, a three percent increase over sales in the same period a year ago.

Iwata also noted he has not seen any sign global economic turmoil has been impacting Nintendo DS or Wii sales.

It's been more than seven years since Pikmin 3 launched on the Wii U but it's relaunching this fall on the Nintendo Switch.

Pikmin 3 Deluxe will launch on the Nintendo Switch on October 30, Nintendo announced on Wednesday, August 5. The game is a port from the Wii U version and will come with the same storyline and look and feel. Nintendo plans to sweeten the pot a bit by adding new features, including the option to play the entire Pikmin 3 Deluxe story mode in a co-op. All of the game's DLC and side missions can also be played in co-op mode and Nintendo said players can choose from new difficulty options to adapt the gameplay to their skill level.

When launching a game console, the price can be one of the last things companies nail down, despite it being an extremely important factor in whether players buy it. Consoles have launched concurrently with one sporting a much lower price tag, and the cheaper option often gets an early lead. This isn't the only factor in whether or not a console will succeed, but price plays a very important role. Digital Trends looked back on every major home console released in North America since the Nintendo Entertainment System and examined if its price contributed to its success -- or failure.
