R50 Remote Requires No PC, Internet Setup

R50 Remote Requires No PC, Internet Setup

Deviating from the new breed of high-end universal remotes that require PCs, Internet connections, and possibly Ph.D.s to set up, Universal Remote Control released a new model on Wednesday that returns to simplicity. The Digital R50 LCD remote can be programmed without any outside gear, and has its entire library of IR codes built right in.

Instead of PC programming, the R50 uses a built-in wizard to walk users through setup right on its own screen. It borrows the Universal Remote’s ProPerfectDatabase from the company’s professional line of products.

The 2-inch LCD display at the top of the remote displays six custom buttons per “page,” of which it can store eight.  Users can choose icons ranging from home theater staples (like a take for a VCR) to channel logos. In total, it can control up to 18 devices.

The R50 is available immediately, and retails for $150.

Samsung’s Eco Remote is cool, but that’s it
Samsung Eco Remote 2022.

When it comes to electronics — anything with a battery, really — there is but a single thing we need to remember. The less you have to worry about charging it, the better off everyone is going to be. You're going to be happier with the experience. The device in question is going to work better and longer. (Batteries, after all, are organic devices and will, eventually, die.) And that means the company that produces the product can do so at a slightly lower cost.

Enter Samsung's new Eco Remote, announced this week at CES. Samsung bills the Eco Remote as a way for customers to "take a literal hands-on approach to reducing their eco footprint." That's due in part to it using recycled materials, but also because it uses solar power and what's known as "RF Harvesting" to give what it calls "a battery-free experience."

Sometimes, it's the little things that count. Today at Google I/O 2021, the company announced that its remote app for Android TV will be built into the Android OS for smartphones.

Over the years, Harmony remotes have become more and more capable, with the ability to control devices both inside and outside home theater setups, including a variety of Bluetooth and smart home devices like light bulbs and smart outlets.
