Verizon Gets Omnia 5MP Camera Smartphone

AT&T isn’t the only carrier building up its arsenal of touch-screen smart phones for the holidays. Following the release of BlackBerry’s much-anticipated Storm last Friday, Verizon has slipped out another touch device on Tuesday with the launch of Samsung’s Omnia. The formerly Euro-only handset makes a 5-megapixel camera its primary attraction and features haptic feedback for an improved touch experience.

Much like the Eternity that Samsung recently debuted on AT&T, the Omnia includes a 3.2-inch touch screen and runs Windows Mobile 6.1, with Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz interface plastered over the top to give it a fresher look and feel. More standard features include 801.11b/g Wi-Fi, media playback capabilities, support for multiple Bluetooth profiles, a full touch-enabled browser, and a host of features from Verizon like VZAppZone and VZ Navigator.

Besides its unusually high resolution, the built-in camera also has a number of other standout features such as face detection, SmileShot for automatically snapping a picture when a subject smiles, as well as panamora, split-shot and anti-shake settings.

Verizon offers the Omnia immediately for $250 after a $70 mail-in rebate and with a two-year contract.

Motorola has announced three new smartphones, the Moto Edge 20 Lite, Moto Edge 20, and Moto Edge 20 Pro. Following on from last year’s Moto Edge and Moto Edge Plus models, all three feature large 6.7-inch OLED screens with HDR10+ support, plus 108-megapixel cameras, and 5G connectivity too. The processor and design all differ, but at its core, the Edge 20 series delivers three really important, desirable features regardless of how much you spend. Let’s take a closer look at the phones.
Motorola Moto Edge 20 Lite
The entry-level version of the Edge 20 series is the Moto Edge 20 Lite, an 8.25mm thick phone with a plastic rear panel, and 2.5D glass over the 6.7-inch OLED screen, which also has a 90Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling. Inside is a MediaTek Dimensity 720 processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage space, plus a microSD card slot to boost it by 512GB.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra to sport 108MP camera, 1.5TB of storage

Samsung appears set for a battle of the best mobile camera next month, as information for its upcoming Galaxy S20 Ultra continues to leak on the web. According to XDA Developers' Max Weinbach, the smartphone will feature a 108-megapixel primary camera, as well as a secondary 48-megapixel camera with 10× zoom, and tertiary 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. As manufacturers gear up to offer the best mobile camera experiences, Samsung will have a strong start. But the Korean company isn’t the first to debut the technology, as Xiaomi released what was potentially the same, or a similar, 108-megapixel sensor in its 2019-announced Mi CC9 Pro.

The CC9 Pro offered a 108-megapixel 1/1.33-inch sensor paired with a 25mm-equivalent f/1.69 lens; the digital sensor for Xiaomi’s device was manufactured by none other than Samsung. Initially announced in August 2019, Samsung noted that it would release the industry’s first 109MP image sensor for smartphones, branding it as the Isocell Bright HMX. At this time, we cannot confirm whether the sensor is the same one as offered in Xiaomi’s device, but we can confidently predict that it's based upon the same foundation. Previous reviews of the Isocell sensor have positioned it in a realm of quality among the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G and Huawei Mate 30 Pro.
