If Tinder wasn’t sleazy enough for you, apps have now begun embracing professional love. Yep. Prostitution. There’s now an app for that.

A Berlin-based company recently launched Peppr, a mobile app that mimics the dating website model concept to connect prostitutes with prospective clients. Peppr, which calls itself the “first mobile Web-app for booking erotic entertainment,” contains profiles of prostitutes that prospective customers can browse.

Pia Poppenreiter, one the app’s co-founders, got the idea for the service while walking through a red-light area in Berlin during winter.

“We’re trying to revolutionize the image of sex work in general … We’re trying to get it away from its shabby image.”

“I was walking down Oranienburger Strasse — I know it sounds cheesy, but it’s the truth — it was chilly and I saw the poor girls on the streets, and I thought, why isn’t there an app? It’s not efficient to wait outside,” she said during an interview with German newspaper The Local.

“We’re trying to revolutionize the image of sex work in general … We’re trying to get it away from its shabby image.”

Male and female prostitutes, or “Pepprs” as the service calls them, can upload their profiles onto the app for free. Clients, on the other hand, have to pay 5 or 10 euros to book through the service. For customers looking for something specific with their temporary mate, the app has adjustable filters, which allows users to peruse profiles according to body type or special services. Once a client decides on his desired companion, he can get in touch and make a date.

To make sure that people aren’t being forced into selling their services, the company behind the app conducts interviews to detect abuse, even though they admit that cannot guarantee that everyone is signing on willingly. Peppr has a tie-up with escort agencies and speaks with prostitutes by phone before uploading their profiles.

“We have a short conversation to get the feeling that this is voluntary and they are independent sex workers … We try to ask them — you kind of find out in a conversation whether they’re doing it on a voluntary basis — we ask them what they did before, whether they’ve always worked voluntarily and so on,” Poppenreiter said.

Peppr, which launched on April 1, exists because Germany legalized prostitution in 2002. The country’s prostitution industry is said to generate 16 billion euros per year.

WhatsApp will now allow users to react to messages with any emoji, in an expansion of its reaction feature that came out last year. It's coming to iOS and Android over the coming weeks, and it brings more personalization to one of the world's most used messaging apps.

Once you get the update, the emoji reactions will work as they do now, with a long press bringing up the basic six options with the incision of a new plus button. Pressing that plus icon will show you the new expanded set of emojis, and you'll be able to add whatever emoji you want. This includes skin tone variations, family types, and more.

The Pixel Watch may need its own special supporting app
Fossil Gen 5 Wear OS

The Pixel Watch is set to debut later this year and could be paired with a dedicated app. References to a Google Pixel Watch App were found by 9to5Google in a recent APK teardown, and while this doesn't necessarily confirm the app, there’s a possibility that such an app is in the works. If this is true, the standard Wear OS app could be replaced by a new Pixel Watch app for the upcoming smartwatch.

The app was referenced inside the latest beta update of Google Play Services. The report mentions a change expected to the Smart Lock features on Google devices, which will enable WearOS 3-powered smartwatches to unlock devices such as smartphones, tablets, and Chromebooks. The feature was initially teased in January and may now be ready for release. It could have a similar implementation to Apple’s "unlock iPhone with Apple Watch" feature.

Tinder app now lets you run a background check on your date
Tinder offering a background check service in partnership with Garbo.

Tinder will now let users perform a background check on the person they intend to go on a date with, a safety measure that will keep “Tinder Swindlers” at bay and will also play a crucial role in preventing any other kind of physical or emotional trauma. The service is offered by Garbo, a non-profit that aims to make background checks more affordable and easy to access.

Thanks to a partnership with Tinder’s parent company Match Group, the dating app’s users will get two background check tickets for free. Each background check costs $2.50 on Garbo, excluding a small transaction fee. In the coming months, the background check feature will also be making its way to more Match Group-owned dating apps such as OkCupid, PlentyOfFish, Hinge, and Azar, among others.
