HTC One ‘M8 Ace’ may match Galaxy S5’s specs, but undercut its price

Other than with its Desire Android phones, HTC doesn’t dabble too much into plastic these days. It criticized Samsung for doing so in a cheap manner with the Galaxy S5. Even so, according to one of Engadget’s “reliable” sources, HTC will make a plastic version of its latest flagship smartphone, the One M8.

According to the source, the “M8 Ace,” which Evleaks teased earlier this month, will have virtually identical specs to the Galaxy S5. The handset will use a plastic unibody and contain a 5-inch 1080p display powered by a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor. Unlike its older sibling, however, the M8 Ace hopes to gain the advantage in price.

Interestingly enough, Chinese site TMTpost ran a rumor that reported a handset that matches the source’s description. According to the rumor, the handset could launch next month for as cheap as CN¥3,000 (roughly $480) unsubsidized (without a wireless contract). While we have handsets like the Nexus 5 and OnePlus One, which run for $350 and $300, respectively, this handset reportedly undercuts Samsung’s latest and greatest by a healthy margin.

If this is true, this would be an interesting move on HTC’s part. Last year, the company released the Butterfly S, which has a plastic body and slightly beefier specs. However, it wasn’t positioned as a lower-cost alternative to the One M7. Time will tell if the M8 Ace, if it exists, will serve as a lower-cost alternative to the One M8 or live our its days as its own separate product.

A person holding the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

When I needed to take photos of a car for a series of stories this month, only one phone came to mind, and it wasn’t one of the top devices made by Google, Samsung, or Apple. It’s the fantastic Xiaomi 14 Ultra, and over the course of a few days, it cemented its place as my favorite camera phone of 2024. Here’s why.
Why is it the best?
The Xiaomi 14 Ultra Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

I already held the Xiaomi 14 Ultra’s camera in high regard after having reviewed the phone and tested it out against other cameras. I especially loved the versatility of the brilliant Photography Kit accessory. But most of this happened earlier on in the year before other brands had the chance to release serious competitors. I knew I had to give it another try, just to be sure of my feelings.

Samsung’s trifold foldable might launch in 2025, and we can’t wait
The hinge on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Last month, we first heard whispers of a potential trifold phone from Samsung. The leak came from a source with a reputable track record, but now another source corroborates the information and gives it even more credibility.

Leaker Yeux1122 posted on Naver, sort of the Google of South Korea, that Samsung has the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Fold 7 FE,  and a trifold Fold 7 variant slated for release in 2025. The Fold 7 and Fold 7 FE are expected to launch at the same time, but there's no firm timeline for the rumored trifold.
