Marvel may own the big screen with its movie franchises, but DC Comics — and its parent company, Warner Bros. — have a firm grip on the television world. And if the first trailer for Gotham is any indication of what the live-action series has in store for audiences, DC’s has another win on the way.

Just hours after it was announced that the series had received a full season order from Fox, the debut trailer for Gotham premiered, offering the first look at the dark, gritty city in the days before the Dark Knight became its guardian. The series follows Detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) as he tackles the ever-increasing control of criminal elements in Gotham, while learning the ways of the city from his new partner, Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue).

Along with chronicling the early days of iconic villains like Penguin (Robin Taylor), Riddler (Cory Michael Smith), and Poison Ivy (Clare Foley), the series also follows the events that led to a young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) becoming the vigilante Batman. The trailer for Gotham also features a few more familiar characters, including future Catwoman, Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova), and Bruce Wayne’s parents, Thomas (Grayson McCouch) and Martha Wayne (Brette Taylor), whose death appears to forge a long-lasting connection between Jim Gordon and the orphaned Bruce Wayne.

The series will be written and produced by Bruno Heller (The MentalistRome) with Emmy-nominee Danny Cannon (CSINikita) directing the pilot episode.

The debut episode of Gotham is expected to air on Fox this fall, with no official premiere date set at this point.
