Warhammer 40K Space Marine, Homefront Shine Behind Closed Doors at THQ

Warhammer 40K Space Marine, Homefront Shine Behind Closed Doors at THQ

You can spot any number of new game demos floating around the open booth at THQ’s E3 exhibit, but by far the most interesting titles are still held tightly under wraps in the company’s closed door theaters. We had the chance to view screenings of two titles swelling with promise: Homefront and Warhammer 40K Space Marine.

The only recently announced Homefront, from Kaos Studios, makes an impression with one of the most scarily realistic and familiar settings we’ve yet seen for an FPS: war-torn American suburbs, circa 2027. Eschewing fantastical space ships and quaint European villages for such an oft-overlooked environmental has a startling effect, especially when combined with the game’s amazingly sharp graphics engine and ultra-detailed maps, which look like the homes you or friends might live in… following a war with North Korea. Walls and roofs have collapsed to be replaced by tattered tarps, vegetable plants hang upside in makeshift greenhouses, and a forest of windmills has sprung up in the street to deal with an impending energy crisis. Unfortunately, short of an intense firefight demo, not much is known about the title, and developers were tightlipped about additional back story and release timelines.

Warhammer 40K Space Marine borrows perhaps the most popular character type from the rich Warhammer universe to spin an entire RPG around. The demo we saw had small squads of space marine shooting, slashing and slamming their way through hordes of orks, which will almost certainly be only one of several races to appear in the final game. Though very little gameplay footage was shown, the depth of the Warhammer story has apparently left no shortage of weapons and upgrades to flesh out the RPG portion of the game, and combat looked to be more of a hack-and-slash Diablo style than the more staid, purposeful action of some other games.

Saber Interactive has responded to a number of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 leaks, including a playable version of the game that has emerged online.

People have already played a pre-release build and posted videos of it on YouTub, and it can still be downloaded on torrent sites. It also not only includes the campaign but also a version of the multiplayer. According to Insider Gaming, the build is around 75GB and feels mostly player-ready besides some placeholder assets.

Warhammer fans will get to battle against each other again in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, according to a new trailer released during the 2024 Warhammer Skulls event on Thursday.

We've known that the game, developed by Saber Interactive, would feature co-op for the single-player campaign, but we now know that it'll have more co-op modes, including a 6v6 PVP mode called "Eternal War." This is good news for fans of the original Space Marine game from 2011, which featured a beloved PVP mode.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 reminds me of Exoprimal — in the best ways

I grew up slightly after the heyday of demo discs, but the one game I most closely associate with it was Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. The third-person shooter was the main game featured on an Official Xbox Magazine demo disc, and I remember having tons of fun playing its short demo again and again, mowing down tons of Orks with my guns and Chainsword in the process. There was something simple and satisfying about its demo that I couldn’t get enough of at 12 years old. While I never actually played the whole game, it’s a somewhat formative gaming experience I’ve remembered for over a decade.

Those positive feelings all resurfaced when I played an hour-long demo of Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment's Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 ahead of its appearance at Gamescom, which captured the same frenetic energy I loved about that demo. More surprising, though, is how much it's reminding me of the much more recent Exoprimal from Capcom. It’s dumb fun, and I mean that in the best possible way.
Power trip
My preview began with Ultramarine Lieutenant Titus, who players will recognize from the first game, and new characters Chairon and Gadriel landing on the Planet of Kadaku. Their goal is to help turn the tide of a nasty intergalactic fight and take back an orbital canon facility. This level of Space Marine 2 swaps out the original’s Orks for Tyranids, which are more bug-like enemies; regardless, they’re just as quickly torn apart by a shred of bullets or a chainsaw sword.
