Gaming and Gamers: All Grown Up

The stereotype of a gamer as a pimply, antisocial kid playing on a PC in his parents’ basement is well established. But as the industry has matured, so have the players, and that ancient image has never been less accurate. This week’s episode of Players Only examines the shifting demographics and politics of the industry.

“It’s weird that the group on EA Online spend more hours per week than World of Warcraft players, and they’re women 35 to 50,” says Mike Capps, president of Epic Games. “My mom’s not playing, but everybody else is.”

What explains the shift? According to Steve Meretzky, VP of game design at Playdom, the rise of the PC in everyday life has made geekiness more prevalent. “Back in the day when two percent of people were computer users, is pretty different from a world where 90 percent of people are computers,” he says. “It’s not so much that geeks are more in favor, so much as they’re less out of favor.”

The Politics of Gaming also covers how the industry is changing to accommodate the influx of new recruits, and how gamers have organized to protect their right to play.

Digital Trends’ video series Players Only debuted last year, earning critical acclaim by offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the video games industry, through the eyes of the people running it. The new season runs August 17 through September 28, with new episodes debuting ever Monday. Episode four is available immediately.

All rare gadgets in Lego Horizon Adventures and what they do
A Thunderjaw roars in Lego Horizon Adventures.

Reliving Aloy's first adventure in Lego Horizon Adventures is a streamlined but faithful retelling of the first game. However, instead of the massive open-world experiences that made the Horizon series some of the best PS5 games, this entry changes the formula to fall more in line with the best Lego games. It is a much smaller game compared to those, with way fewer collectibles. This makes it much easier to play in co-op, but it isn't without a few things you can gather up. Rare gadgets are pieces of equipment you can wear to enhance or add new abilities. Here are all the rare gadgets in the game and what cool effects they have.

Lego Horizon Adventures only has 10 rare gadgets in total that you will unlock as you progress through the story. They each serve a unique purpose and are worth experimenting with as you attempt to clean up any remaining Trophies.

Xbox is finally letting you cloud stream games you own, with some limits
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty's new character. She's in a security uniform leaning against a railing with a fiery cityscape in the background.

Years after Xbox promised that users could stream games they own through the cloud, the company is finally launching that functionality, albeit with some restrictions.

Starting Wednesday, Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will be able to use Xbox Cloud Gaming to stream games they already own, even if they're not in the Game Pass catalog. However, they can only stream from a list of 50 supported games right now. You can view the full list on Xbox's website, but it's a good mix of titles, ranging from AAA releases like Cyberpunk 2077, Star Wars Outlaws, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to recent indies like Animal Well, Fear the Spotlight, and Dredge. This applies to any version of the game you own, like if you have Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition.

We made our own 2024 Game Awards expansion pack with 5 new categories
Hades 2 key art from its first trailer.

In the lead-up to last year's Game Awards, we noted that the ceremony could use some new categories. We felt that the current list was starting to feel lacking, especially as a shifting game industry has moved more toward remakes, early access launches, and more. We secretly hoped that someone running the show would take those suggestions to heart and adopt them. That didn't happen with this year's nominations, leading to all sorts of discourse about whether a DLC should be considered for Game of the Year and when is the right time to include it.

So we've taken matters into our own hands: welcome to Digital Trends' 2024 Game Awards Expansion Pack!
