Samsung TL225 Front-LCD Camera People love to shoot themselves – on camera, that is. Take a spin through Facebook and you’ll find any number of self shots: in front of statues in Rome, riding shotgun on epic car trips, and posed with theme park mascots. All of them framed incredibly poorly.

When you don’t have a tripod or a friend, it’s the best option you’ve got – but Samsung’s trying to improve the process with its latest duo of cameras: the TL225. Besides the typical LCD in the rear, it sports an additional 1.5-inch screen up front, specifically for composing those solo shots destined for the Web.

Just center your mug in the frame and snap, the same way you would if you were behind the camera. No more shooting blind. For the group shots taken with a timer, the same screen even shows a timer, so no one has an excuse for blinking at the wrong time ever again. And for snapping shots of kids, it switches to displaying cartoony animations to keep the little ones’ attention on the camera.

Like a lot of compact cameras with gigantic rear displays, the 3.5-inch LCD on the TL225 is touch sensitive, but it also includes haptic feedback to vibrate whenever you make a selection. Other specs include a 12.2-megapixel sensor, optical image stabilization, the ability to shoot 720p HD video, 4.6x optical zoom, and a wide-angle 27mm lens.

The TL225 is available immediately for $350. Its cheaper little brother, the TL220, gets a smaller 3-inch rear screen and sells for $300. More information on both cameras can be found at Samsung.

The ultrawide camera on the Galaxy S21 Ultra doesn’t just take ultrawide photos. When you get right up close, some clever software and artificial intelligence processing activate an effective macro mode. The quality of the photos you get, and how easy they are to take, quickly banishes all those bad feelings towards macro cameras you may have, after potentially being disappointed by low-megapixel macro cameras on phones recently.
How does it work?
Samsung’s improved A.I. abilities make the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s macro mode possible. When you get within 10 centimeters of an object, the camera knows to switch over to its close-up mode. Best of all is that it has autofocus, so it operates in the same way as the other cameras on the phone and ensures what you point the camera at stays in focus. It’s all as simple as that, although there is one thing you have to do to make it work -- switch to the ultrawide camera.

How do you know it has worked? Sometimes you will get a notification that says, “Enhanced Focus” on the screen -- Samsung’s name for the macro/close-up mode -- when it activates, but this doesn’t always happen. The easiest way is to just look at the screen, as the object will quickly come into focus. None of this happens if you’re using any of the other camera lenses.
Macro modes are (usually) terrible
Why do I like Samsung’s close-up mode? Because it’s really good. Padding the number of camera lenses a phone has with a substandard macro camera has been an unfortunate trend over the past couple of years. The 2-megapixel macro cameras rarely take a photo that was worth looking at, let alone sharing. Sure, manufacturers may claim it makes a difference to the quality of artificial bokeh shots, but the Google Pixel 4a does a solid job without one. I’d rather they weren’t there at all.

Do you never want to miss a photo opportunity, but sometimes aren’t sure if a photo or video will work best to capture the moment? Samsung’s Single Take mode is for you. It leans on Samsung’s enhanced artificial intelligence (A.I.), comprehensive editing suite, and multiple cameras to take all the work out of making sure you’ve got the entire scene covered, and all you have to do is point your phone in the right direction.

Don’t think this is just a gimmick or something only useful to those who aren’t experienced photographers. It’s much more than that. Single Take launched on the Galaxy S20 series, but it’s back for the Galaxy S21 series and has been upgraded to Single Take 2.0 at the same time. I've been using it on the Galaxy s21 Ultra, and here’s what’s new, and how to get the best from this unusual and very helpful feature.
What you need to use Single Take 2.0
You need a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus, or a Samsung Galaxy S21. These all have the latest One UI 3.1 software onboard, while the cameras and processor are competent and powerful enough to operate Single Take 2.0. While it’s likely version 2.0 will make it to other older Samsung phones in the future, not every feature will be included, as some are only made possible by the superior A.I. and other technology inside the S21 phones.
What does Single Take 2.0 do?
Single Take creates 14 different individual compositions from a single short video clip, ranging from a “golden” best shot, a black-and-white photo, and a filtered still, to a boomerang-style video, a slow-motion video, and several shots created using filters and at different video speeds. If you can’t decide whether to use video, shoot a still, use wide-angle, or even the 108-megapixel mode, just use Single Take. It covers all these and more.

When we picture the best cameras, we tend to focus on specs like continuous shooting speed, resolution, and autofocus performance. While those are important factors, I'd argue what truly makes a great camera is not something that comes through on a spec sheet. This is why I think the best digital camera is the Fujifilm X-T4 -- not because it has the most megapixels, the biggest sensor, or the fastest performance, but because more than any other camera, it inspired me to pick it up and shoot it.

That's not to say its spec sheet doesn't impress. The X-T4 is the most balanced camera I've ever used thanks to a combination of great image quality, solid performance, and excellent video features. But it doesn't win any one of those categories outright.
