While the first trailer for director Jonathan Liebesman’s reboot of the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie franchise was a little light on actual mutant turtles, the latest trailer more than makes up for it with a hefty dose of heroes in half-shells.
With just over a month to go until Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hits theaters, it’s understandable that the film’s marketing campaign is ramping up for a big promotional push. The second trailer for the film certainly seems to throw it all on the table, offering viewers a good look at all four main characters, as well as their mentor Splinter and the film’s villain, The Shredder. And unlike its predecessor, this trailer is surprisingly light on actress Megan Fox in her role as reporter April O’Neil (which some might say is a good thing).
Early on, there was some question as to whether the new film would sacrifice some of the franchise’s trademark comedy for a darker, grittier tone, but the footage in this new trailer offers a pretty convincing answer, with the teenage heroes peppering the action with quite a bit of humor. And much as it should be, Michelangelo (the turtle with the orange mask, ‘natch) is the source of most of that comedy, with the team’s resident prankster keeping things light.
The new trailer also teases some action in a winter setting far from the Turtles’ home turf, as well as a scene (around the 1:13 mark in the footage) that should have fans buzzing a bit. As Splinter (Tony Shalhoub) intones that the Turtles might not be ready for the city’s greatest threat, William Fichtner — who reportedly plays The Shredder — is seen telling a mysterious, massive figure, “We’re taking your armor to the next level.” This is followed by a scene of the armored (and also massive) Shredder battling the Turtles, leading to some questions about whether Fichtner will indeed be playing The Shredder.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hits theaters August 8, but you can check out the latest trailer below:
