We heard a lot about Android Wear at Google I/O, including the first three smartwatches to sport the software: the LG G Watch, the Samsung Gear Live and the Moto 360. Now the first Android Wear-compatible apps are appearing on Google Play, including some of Google’s own software.

Android Wear smartwatches already support notifications from your phone out-of-the-box — they work like an extension of the notification drawer on your handset, so you can check emails and texts and even control music playback. All apps can work with Android Wear in this way without any changes, but some code tweaks are required to take advantage of advanced notifications, extra voice input commands and sensor inputs (such as the heart rate monitor on the Samsung Gear Live).

When you see an app announced as updated for Android Wear, it means it has been modified to specifically take advantage of the functions on the new smartwatches. Pinterest has been quick off the mark, updating its app to buzz your watch whenever you go past a location related to something you’ve pinned. PayPal has also announced a beta version of its next app with Android Wear support — it enables users to check-in and pay on the go, and get payment notifications on their wrists.

Music tracking and sharing service Soundwave is another app that’s been updated for Android Wear, enabling following and sharing from a smartwatch (handy when you’re out on the morning jog). Google is of course keen to get all of its apps up to speed with the new wearable technology, and Phandroid spotted that both Maps and Keep have been upgraded with extra smartwatch-ready functionality.

Google Keep was one of the apps shown off in the Android Wear demo at the I/O keynote, where the wearable SDK was officially released to developers. All app updates are still handled via a compatible Android handset, with the Wear components automatically pushed out to the smartwatch as required.

Google just announced 8 big Android updates. Here’s what’s new

At Moblie World Congress (MWC ) 2024, Google is bringing a healthy bunch of new features to Android. In line with the AI push all across the industry, some notable AI-driven enhancements are on the table. There are also a handful of core Android features that sound practically amazing.
The first in line is Gemini. The generative AI chatbot recently got a standalone app for Android, and now it’s headed for the Google Messages app. Users can chat with Gemini directly in the messaging app and use its generative capabilities for a host of things, like drafting replies, refining a message, and more.

Another feature that was showcased a while ago is finally ready for prime time. Android Auto is gaining support for message summarization for standalone texts and group chats, and it can also suggest replies. With a single tap, users will also be able to drop a message, start a call, and share an estimated arrival time. The idea is to deploy AI for crucial tasks so that it can minimize distractions while driving.
Lookout, an accessibility-centric feature for users with vision challenges, is also getting meaningful AI love. On Android phones, Lookout will now read AI-generated captions and descriptions for media content. For now, the AI boost to Lookout and Messages is limited to the English language.

Google is launching a powerful new AI app for your Android phone
Google Gemini app on Android.

Remember Bard, Google’s answer to ChatGPT? Well, it is now officially called Gemini. Also, all those fancy AI features that previously went by the name Duet AI have been folded under the Gemini branding. In case you haven’t been following up all the AI development flood, the name is derived from the multi-modal large language model of the same name.

To go with the renaming efforts, Google has launched a standalone Gemini app on Android. Moreover, the Gemini experience is also being made available to iPhone users within the Google app on iOS. But wait, there’s more.

Google is bringing Chrome browser to cars, even more EV features to Maps
Android Auto interface showing EV charging times.

Google is bringing a great combination of features to Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, particularly for those who drive an EV.

Google Maps is adding more EV-centric features for those who use Android Auto from their connected phone. Starting with the Ford F-150 Lightning and Mach-E, you'll now see information on expected state of charge on arrival to your destination, as well as charging station locations and expected charging times for longer trips. This is a feature that's been available for EVs running Google built-in (aka Android Automotive), and in my experience, it's extremely helpful and helps alleviate charging anxiety. It's wonderful to see this brought to the much wider-reaching Android Auto version of Maps, and I hope it expands to more cars soon.
