Warner Bros. has released the first official image of Henry Cavill as Superman in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the sequel to 2013’s polarizing reboot of Superman’s big-screen adventures. The new photo features Superman standing in the rain on what looks to be a Gotham rooftop — although, given the beating Metropolis took at the end of the first film, it could very well be that formerly sparkling city, too.
Debuting in USA Today, the image confirms that Cavill’s costume for Batman v Superman will feature few — if any — changes from the 2013 film, with only some small tweaks around the waist and belt area to the revamped Superman uniform. The film is currently shooting in Detroit.
Director Zack Snyder offered some explanation for the unique title the film is currently sporting. According to Snyder, the decision to opt for a “v” instead of “vs.” is intended “to keep it from being a straight ‘versus’ movie, even in the most subtle way.”
As for the non-Superman characters in the film, Snyder said of Ben Affleck’s debut as a grizzled, veteran vigilante assumes some familiarity with the character’s 75-year history and, as he put it, “it’s cooler to see a crusty old Batman beating the snot out of guys.” While he hasn’t filmed any scenes with Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot yet, Snyder said, “she’s working out and getting buff and ripped.”
“You can talk all you want about other superhero movies, but it’s Batman and Superman, let’s just be honest,” said Snyder. “I don’t know how you get bigger than that.”
… Or darker, apparently.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled to hit theaters May 6, 2016.
