Back in 2012, Nokia was in hot water for attempting to pass off video footage taken with a DSLR as taken with the company’s latest Lumia handset at the time, the Lumia 920. Nokia apologized for the blunder, but it looks like Xiaomi is continuing where Nokia left off, according to John Gruber on his personal blog, Daring Fireball.

According to Gruber, Xiaomi stole copyrighted images from different places of the Internet and tried to pass them off as those taken with the company’s Mi 3 handset. Some of the images were from Flickr, 500px, and even National Geographic.

While this may seem like a boisterous accusation, only one section titled ‘Beautiful Pictures Taken With The Mi 3‘ explicitly states that the pictures were taken with the Mi 3. In addition, the rendered image that showed the copyrighted images has since been updated. You can see the original on the left and the altered version on the right in the gallery below.

It’s likely that Xiaomi did not post those copyrighted images on the camera roll by accident, lending credence to the idea that it’s not confident in the Mi 3’s ability to take good pictures.

Xiaomi’s new Ultra 12 phone could have a huge camera bump

Xiaomi is preparing to launch the Xiaomi 12 series, and a new set of renders from the Dutch site Let's Go Digital may give us an early look at one of next year's Android superphones. The renders are backed up by a case leak of the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, showing off what appears to be a massive camera bump on the rear.

We can see that a camera enclosure covers nearly half of the phone's rear, but that design could be justified based on hardware needs. The Mi 11 Ultra also had a beefy camera layout with a 50-megapixel main lens, a 48MP camera with up to 120x zoom, and another 48MP ultrawide camera. Combined with an earlier report that the company could ship a 200MP main camera, that sets a baseline for what we can expect from Xiaomi's next phone.

Xiaomi has never been a company to shy away from outlandish specs, and a new report claims its next Ultra phone just might stay in that lane. The company is said to be considering a 200-megapixel camera (MP) for the next Xiaomi Ultra phone, according to Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo. The current Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra has a massive 50MP camera. While more pixels don't necessarily equate to better photos, the company has proven its photography chops enough to earn the benefit of the doubt.

With summer coming to a close, it's time for leaks of 2022's flagship phones to begin to emerge. We've already gotten a taste of the Samsung Galaxy S22. With Xiaomi's phones coming first, there have been reports that the company will continue to push the limits of its ultra-premium handsets. According to Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi's 12 series will come in three models, as the previous series did. They'll all be powered by the Snapdragon 898, but the company's most impressive feature will be the camera.
