Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li writer to pen Top Gun 2 script

It’s been almost 30 years since Top Gun introduced the world to Tom Cruise’s impossibly cool United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, but plans for a sequel continue to move along. The latest update on the follow-up to the ’80s classic has writer Justin Marks attached to work on a script for the film.

Marks, whose script for a live-action/CGI adaptation of The Jungle Book is currently in production with Jon Favreau directing the film, has worked on various genre projects over the years, including the 2009 video-game movie Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel to Top Gun will explore the relevance of human pilots at a time when drones have become the go-to military unit for air-based warfare. Cruise is expected to reprise his role as Maverick.

Marks will reportedly work on the latest draft of the script penned by Peter Craig (The Town), who wrote that version when original Top Gun director Tony Scott was attached to direct the sequel. Scott committed suicide in 2012, and the project stalled out in the aftermath.

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions are producing the Top Gun sequel, which doesn’t have a release date at this point.

Because of the way that the studios have scheduled their films, we can say with some certainty that the movie most likely to unseat Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is going to be Top Gun: Maverick. Why? Because this is a sequel to the original Top Gun, which helped establish Tom Cruise as an action hero in 1986. Naturally, Cruise will be reprising his role in the film that shares his character's name. However, Maverick will be surrounded by a new generation of pilots for the sequel. And Paramount Pictures is giving each of those characters their own posters ahead of the film.

First up is Maverick himself. As played by Cruise, his real name is Captain Pete Mitchell, and he remains a flight instructor and a test pilot because he has refused promotion for almost thirty years.

Sony Pictures' Morbius may have been a major stumbling point for Marvel movies, but Disney's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hopefully make things right again. Besides Doctor Strange, several other theatrical releases are coming out this month that appeal to all types of audiences. From a tense psychological horror film (Men) to the long-awaited sequel to a classic Tom Cruise movie (Top Gun: Maverick), studios are pulling out all the stops for the first month of the always-crowded summer movie season. After all, North America is slowly going back to the way things were before the COVID-19 pandemic, so why shouldn't studios let audiences enjoy their movies on the big screen?

Top Gun: Maverick trailer sends Tom Cruise back in the air

In 1986, the original Top Gun helped firmly establish Tom Cruise as a movie star. And unlike many icons from the '80s, Cruise has maintained that status and avoided the direct-to-video phase of his career. Now, Cruise is revisiting the franchise that started it all in Top Gun: Maverick. The film was actually finished three years ago, but it has faced numerous pandemic-related delays. Now that the new trailer has arrived, there are finally clear skies ahead for the sequel.

The trailer picks up with Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) nearly 30 years after the original film. While Maverick's peers have gone on to bigger things, he remains a captain and a test pilot simply so he can keep flying missions. Maverick finds himself back in the Top Gun program while teaching a new generation of pilots the skills they will need to survive in hostile skies. But at least one of the cadets will remind Maverick of his darkest hour, when his friend, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), was killed in the original movie.
