Bethesda Softworks has released a new gameplay trailer for The Evil Within to coincide with the Tokyo Game Show. The trailer features all manner of horrifying things: shambling zombies, Lovecraftian monstrosities, dilapidated hospital wards, and empty swing sets. For creepy juxtapositional effect, the first chunk of the trailer is set to soothing piano music as the images become scarier and scarier while the narrator informs you of how little hope you have of surviving.
The Evil Within marks the triumphant return of Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami to horror fiction, and he assembled an all-star voice cast to help him. Survival Horror is making a strong comeback lately, with Silent Hills and Alien: Isolation. The Evil Within pushes the interactive experience away from gunplay power fantasies and back to anxiety-producing survival against unfair odds.
It’s set for release on PC and PlayStation/Xbox consoles on October 14, 2014.
