HBO confirmed the casting of the two well-known actors this week, and offered up some details about both their roles and the storyline running through the series’ second season.
According to the network, Farrell will play a character named Ray Velcoro, described as “a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.” For his part, Vaughn will play a character named Frank Semyon, “a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.”
HBO indicated that the second season will follow a trio of police officers (including Farrell’s character) whose lives and careers become mixed up with that of Vaughn’s character in the aftermath of a murder and the conspiracy that’s unearthed because of it.
Fast & Furious 6 director Justin Lin will direct the first two episodes of the season, which will span eight episodes and is expected to begin production in late 2014. There’s no premiere date set for the season yet.
