Cadillac’s partnership with American Airlines brings luxury to 30,000 feet

Cadillac owners are used to driving in luxury, but thanks to a new partnership with American Airlines, those comforts will extend to 30,000 feet.

The relationship between the American transportation mainstays is still very new, but they’re debuting three exclusive benefits to their customers this month, with more to follow later this year.

The first perk is a Luxury Airport Transfer Program that’s currently being launched at Los Angeles International Airport. The service identifies ConciergeKey members and grants them deluxe, private transportation between gates in a Cadillac CTS, SRX, or Escalade.

ConciergeKey is an enigmatic, exclusive service that sits above Executive Platinum on the airline’s priority list. Its benefits are known only to high profile, high-spending customers who’ve registered as Executive Platinum for several years; reports indicate ConciergeKey members spend around $50,000 a year with the airline.

By the end of 2014, American Airlines hopes to implement similar programs at Dallas/Forth Worth International, LaGuardia, and John F. Kennedy.

The second benefit is the accumulation of AAdvantage frequent flier miles with the test drive of a new Cadillac. When customers call and schedule an appointment ahead of time, they can earn 7,500 miles just by taking a spin in a new CT6.

In addition, the American automaker plans to open “Cadillac exhibits” at major airports soon, but the company didn’t go into any further detail.

“This is just the beginning of the opportunities we see with our partnership with Cadillac,” said Suzanne Rubin, President of the AAdvantage Loyalty Program. “We are thrilled to be able to offer these benefits to our customers.”

With the groundwork of the partnership laid, what benefits could be next for the crossover customers? Perhaps chrome landing gear on select flights? Specialty cocktails for Cadillac owners? The possibilities, as they say, are endless.

There are also some intelligent charging features, which include things such as protection against things like under and over voltage, leakage, and lighting, and it has an automatic cut-off when your EV is fully charged.

Hyundai plans to release several electric cars in the coming years, including an American-made three-row SUV, but it's also investing in other technologies for buyers who aren't ready to go electric. One is an extended-range system that promises over 550 miles of driving range.

Announced as part of the brand's mid- to long-term strategy, the Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) will use an innovative drivetrain that relies on a gasoline-burning engine to quell range anxiety. The engine won't directly drive the wheels; it will act as a generator that makes electricity and sends it to the motors that zap the wheels into motion, likely via a small battery pack. This technology isn't new, as the Chevrolet Volt used a similar layout. Hyundai hasn't released full technical details yet, but it notes that its EREVs will be all-wheel-drive. Compared to an EV, the EREVs will benefit from quicker recharging times, a lower price, and more than 550 miles of driving range.

Ariel, a small British company known for developing segment-bending sports cars, has unveiled an electric version of its Nomad 2 off-roader. While still at the concept stage, the E-Nomad will create a new niche in the EV space if it receives the proverbial green light for production.

Going electric wasn't an excuse to tone down the styling, and the E-Nomad looks just as wild as the Nomad 2 it's based on. Sitting high off the ground, it's characterized by two pairs of three headlights that give it a bug eye look, wheels that stick out from the body, and a highly functional interior. There's nothing else quite like it on the road; it's pegged at the intersection of sports cars, SUVs, and dune buggies.
