After changing writers back in May 2014, the long-rumored sequel to Independence Day is apparently still moving forward — and according to actor Jeff Goldblum, there’s a good chance he’ll reprise his role in it.

In a recent interview with Time, the veteran actor not only confirmed that the follow-up to the 1996 alien invasion blockbuster was indeed happening, but also revealed that his character — a satellite technician who gets caught up in defeating the aliens — will return for the sequel.

“I had a meeting and have been talking over the last several months or year with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producer,” he said. “They’ve been cooking [it] up and say they have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon.”

While Goldblum acknowledged the uncertain status of such projects until they’re actually in production, he seemed optimistic about the likelihood of revisiting Independence Day almost 20 years after the original film hit theaters.

“‘Nebulous until actually’ is what that file is under, but yeah, they’re still talking about it,” he said. “I’ve heard recent rumblings here and there about it, and ‘Oh, there’s a scripting coming in’ — maybe last weekend there was a script handed in, so it’s brewing.”
